"City of Angels"

Love the clever lyrics and the authentic swing score.

Give Adam Lambert an Emmy  Dec 29 2018, 06:32:33 PM

...for his performance in the Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Cher. WOW! Not sure current categories would accommodate this; if not, revive Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. He’s way deserving!

When people get the song title wrong  Apr 26 2011, 12:30:51 PM
I saw "A Conversation with Stephen Sondheim" a few years ago in West Palm Beach and cringed when a man in the audience told the composer that his favorite Sondheim song was "There's A Place for Us" from "West Side Story."

Sondheim responded graciously, but I had to restrain myself from leaping up and apologizing profusely on behalf of all South Florida theatergoers.

If you're not celibate, we could raise hell a bit.

re: Favorite Sondheim Lyric?  Mar 29 2008, 06:32:06 PM
Maybe not my very favorite, but it always makes me laugh (especially the way Stritch sings it):

"She's tall enough to be your mother."
--Joanne in "Poor Baby" from "Company"

re: Which Tony-winning performances have you seen live?  Aug 27 2007, 04:20:09 PM
Liza Minnelli, “The Act”

Chita Rivera, "Kiss of the Spider Woman"

Brent Carver, "Kiss of the Spider Woman"

Anthony Crivello, "Kiss of the Spider Woman"

Michael Cerveris, "Assassins"

re: Who did you see before they were famous??  Aug 27 2007, 03:57:13 PM
Christine Baransky, John Mahoney, Patricia Clarkson and a chubby, 19-year-old Ben Stiller in “House of Blue Leaves” (1986).

Also in the cast were already-known Swoozy Kurtz and Danny Aiello.

Fourth row, center: So close, Ben spit on me, not once but twice!

re: Favorite Broadway Songs About Places  May 29 2007, 07:25:44 PM
"You Don't Know Paree" from Cole Porter's "Fifty Million Frenchmen." If you've never heard the song, do yourself a favor and find a recording. It's heartbreakingly beautiful.

Does Barbra's vocal trick at the end of "Don't Rain On My Parade" on the "Funny Girl" OBC recording count?
Worst musicals.  Apr 13 2007, 10:57:33 PM
The Act. Dreadful!
re: Wicked movie: Inspired casting idea  Dec 18 2006, 11:05:23 PM
In response to Kringas's comment: "It's completely different. The double-cast actors never played scenes against themselves."

In the movie "Adaptation," Nicolas Cage played against himself to great and inspired dramatic effect. No gimmick there but, rather, art.

re: Wicked movie: Inspired casting idea  Dec 18 2006, 05:51:28 PM
In response to Kringas's comment: "Had Judy Garland played Dorothy and the Scarecrow, you might have a point."

Think possibilities!

re: Wicked movie: Inspired casting idea  Dec 18 2006, 05:49:04 PM
Weez: Take a look at Reese's performance in "Election" for inspiration.
re: Wicked movie: Inspired casting idea  Dec 18 2006, 05:45:14 PM
In response to Kringas's comment, "Shouldn't the text be able to that, rather than relying a gimmick?"

Every literary or dramatic device is a gimmick if poorly executed. If well executed, it's art. Look at how well the same "gimmick" was used in MGM's "Wizard of Oz".
