I think part of the point of the ITW ending is the mere fact that it is complicated. Life is complicated. There is no such thing as good and evil, right v. wrong. Perspective and decision making is what drives us in life. There aren't happy endings for everyone, even in fairy tales.
The more complicated you can get in musical theatre, as Sondheim has proven again and again, the more timeless, provocative and beautiful it is.

I'll be doing Parade but I'm replacing, "That's What He Said," with "Run and Tell That," and , "Sch'ma" with "No One Mourns The Wicked," because I wanted to give a more sympathetic portrayal of the oppressed Southerners who were attacked by the radical Brooklyn Jews.
That's ok, right?

Tom O'Neill took back that statement that there was no screening!
Sasha — sorry to cause further confusion! Now Miramax has flipflopped and says there WAS a test screening, but the studio wasn’t involved. ‘Twas done by producer Scott Rudin. What’s odd: I checked with one of Rudin’s film reps at 42 West earlier today and he didn’t seem to know about this test either! What the heck’s going on? Don’t these people talk to each other???? Sorry for this mixup. I just posted the update at TheEnvelope, too —
