Top 20 Favorite Musical Songs
 Aug 31 2010, 03:34:08 PM
I would feel bad taking up two posts here since I'm such a lurker, so I won't do Sondheim songs in a different post. I'm going to limit myself to 10 Sondheim, 3 JRB, 2 Guettel, and 5 Miscellaneous. I reserve the right to use the Miscellaneous section for any Sondheim, JRB, or Guettel songs if I choose. I also reserve the right to edit.

Sondheim:
1. Finishing the Hat
2. Sunday (well, the end. Does that count? Maybe?)
3. Beautiful
4. Color and Light
5. Children and Art

North Carolina School of the Arts High School Audition- Help?
 Mar 28 2010, 09:14:15 PM
I have an audition for the UNC School of the Arts 12th Grade Program in a little less than a week. I'm performing a monologue from As You Like It, one from Assassins, and the title song from No, No, Nanette. I'm aware that the first two are probably gravely overdone, but they're both what I have (and it's probably less of a big deal since it's a high school.)

I cut off the slate since it had my full name in it, and the "Thank you," etc. is cut off at the end, but any comments on my overall audition would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Your favorite "moment" in a cast recording.
 May 24 2009, 03:31:10 PM
Not necessarily in the lyric, but just any moment from a show's CD that gives you chills or just makes you happy by the way it's delivered. Sorry if it's been done before...I'm horrible with the search.

Right now, mine are...

Next to Normal:
When Gabe comes in for the first time in Just Another Day.
The way Aaron says "watched" in "watched while you died" from I Am the One (Reprise.)
All of the dialogue in I Am the One (Reprise.)
Alice's tone for "What makes m

I saw Janet as Vanessa and Krysta as Carla. I had never seen the show before, but I thought they were both incredible in their performances. Krysta was adorable as Carla, and Janet really took on the role well.

re: The Official 'What Do These Lyrics Mean?' Thread

"I closed my eyes
Drew back the curtain
To see for certain
What I thought I knew
Far, far away
Someone was weeping
But the world was sleeping
Any dream will do"

Well, isolated from the rest of the song, this part works well enough. It would mean that he has been shutting himself off from reality for a long time, but now he realizes that he must face the horror of what's really happening in the world. And so he forces himself to "draw back the curtain" and see

re: Who's your favorite mother? (from a play or musical)
 May 12 2009, 01:42:29 PM
Though she's not really shown as a mother, the references to Dot by Marie from Sunday in the Park are pretty touching.

Also:
Diana from Next to Normal
Fantine from Les Miserables
Mama Rose (of course) from Gypsy
Margaret from Light in the Piazza

Sorry, double post.

And Into the Woods, but that obviously has a lot of elements of Sunday (actors, etc.)
Sorry if it's been done...

...but I couldn't find anything on this when I did a search.

Anyways, what's everyone's top 10 favorite songs from Broadway/Off-Broadway?

Mine are (trying to limit this to one song per show.):

Stars and the Moon- Songs for a New World
Finishing the Hat- Sunday in the Park with George
Dulcinea- Man of La Mancha
How Can You Describe a Face- Subways are For Sleeping
A Little Fall of Rain- Les Miz
Look Over There- La Cage
Love to Me- Light in the Pi

re: Most despicable act by a likable character?

I second Angel's killing the dog, Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett, and Jamie in L5Y.

I love Roxie in Chicago (not as much as Velma, but still...), but I hate how she inspires all this false hope in Amos. I cried the first time I watched the movie (I was about nine) because I felt so sorry for him. When I saw the stage play about two years ago, the effect was even greater.

Umm...anyone?
Help with song!
 Aug 26 2007, 09:11:50 PM
Hi! I'm a high school freshman looking for a song to do in a school talent show. I want something funny and quirky, something that a typical high-schooler wouldn't roll his eyes at. I don't want something stereotypically "Broadway," like Rodgers & Hammerstein (though I love them.) The past two years I've done "Mix Tape" and "I Love My Dictionary," so something along those lines. I need something appropriate for school.
I'm a soprano, but I can go pretty low as well. I don't have my exact range on hand, but my highest point is something around the "ha-ha" after "My wardrobe is expensive as the devil" in "Glitter and be Gay," and I my lowest point is the "old" in "old man river."
Here's a clip of my singing, although it sounds very "off" and isn't exactly the best representation of my voice. My computer was making the sound jump around, so I'm sort of off the music.

Anyway, does anyone have some ideas for me? Sorry for the novel.

re: What was the first show you were obsessed with and are you going to see

My first real obsession was ANNIE in first grade...

Since then
Sunday in the Park with George
Company
Aida
Man of La Mancha

Now...Les Mis. I absolutely HAVE to see the original cast of the revival but it will be hard as i am in eighth grade and living in Georgia...

An example of a good song for my range is Goodnight My Someone from Music Man. Unfortunately, wrong age and wrong style. POTO is a more commonly used than i need.
