C'mon! That was a terrific arrangement and it was well suited for a television audience. They both sang great. Kelli didn't need to "riff or scat" to keep up with Harry. It wasn't intended to be theatre. If you want theatre, go to the theatre. It was a music segment on a television show that advertised Harry's new CD and the current production of Pajama Game.
