And the character was writtenin the first place forBaltimore's famous drag queen, Divine, who was a close friend of director John Waters. They preserved the tradition for the musical and the movie-musical remake.

I was just going to post this very thing. The part orginally called for it. So as someone who remembers the original movie, its not unusual to me at all. In this age of progressiveness, we're seeing people become more bold with casting choices which is fine, although personally, I don't think EVERYTHING needs a so-called 'gender bend' version. Personally, continuity and 'does it make sense' is an issue for me. For example, if they were to cast a woman of color to play Cossette in Les Mis, yet Fantine and the student were still caucasian, it wouldn't make sense, or Evita played by a black or an Asian woman (I am black by the way in case someone knee jerks and says "how dare she". It seems people want to see just anything all in the name of progressiveness and it doesn't matter if it doesn't jive with the production's original integrity
