Good Person of Szechwan hands out budget spreadsheet instead of playbill Nov 6

I think putting budgets instead of Playbills makes a good point. Metatheatre, and if I recall Brecht used this device a lot, comments on itself. This tears down the illusion that theater, or for that matter society, just "happens". It's the same when you buy a candy bar. One sees the shiny wrapper and eats the tasty chocolate, but forgets about the workers picking the coco beans.

Analyzing the text of Sweeney Todd Oct 27

Sweeney Todd is a monster, yet a leading man who we all root for and get behind. How was this achieved? Are characters heros or villains depending on who is telling the story such as the Elphaba in Wicked? As a character, it may be interesting to explore his transformation in the text of the musical.

BOOK OF MORMON offends New Orleans Drama Critic Oct 27

This is really funny. When Auntie Mame was first adapted into a stage play, one of the writers (I forget which one) said something to the effect of, "She's immoral and unlikable. There is no way audiences would ever root for such a character." Of course, she went on to become a classic archetype. It turned out to be a good thing for Robert E. Lee and Jerome Lawrence.
