The premise of Free Shakespeare in the Park is a wonderful idea - the idea being that the theater is accessible financially to anyone who makes an effort to get a ticket. However, this becomes problematic because Shakespeare's works, while genius and well-crafted, are not all that accessible to the general public. I reviewed it when it was running at the Alliance Theater, and I was shocked to see it move on beyond that. I was even more astounded to watch its success tonight from the critics. While I have not seen the current version, I would imagine, it would have had to be redone almost entirely especially through score (expect actors, set and tech) to appeal to a Broadway audience.
