BEETLEJUICE - Pre-Broadway Tryout in DC
 Nov 15 2018, 02:18:21 PM

Saw the show this past weekend, and disagree with nearly every single thing JustReviewingOkay said. In order for this to survive in New York, they will need a book doctor who actually understands this story to start work immediately. The writers completely missed the point of view of the movie Beetlejuice and don't have the ability to fix it. No one cares about Kerry Butler's dead baby or even Lydia's dead mom. That's not what this story was built to withstand.

Sad to see Honeymoon go...and this disturbing trend

While I do think the score of Fun Home is way beyond what we usually hear on Broadway, I'm in agreement that Jason Robert Brown has to be stopped. Both Bridges and Honeymoon were subpar, and the Last Five Years film brought all of the glaringly bad material in that score under a microscope. I absolutely adore Parade, but it looks like we're never going to get that level of work from him again.

Furthermore, I still don't know what crystal meth Brantley was smoking when he revie

HONEYMOONERS straight to Broadway
 Apr 6 2015, 02:05:30 AM

I haven't heard anything specific about the show, but I would see Hank Azaria in anything. Same goes for McGrath and Kritzer. Wonder if the reason they bypassed Goodspeed has anything to do with Azaria?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Paper Mill

While I saw this production and quite frankly thought it sucked, I also find it hilarious that Scott Schwartz is being roasted on this board because he's not a "real director." OK, sure. Tick Tick Boom wasn't a real show, nor was Golda's Balcony, or Bat Boy, or Jane Eyre, or any of the other dozens of things he's directed.

8 time Oscar winner Alan Menken and theatre legend Stephen Schwartz couldn't possibly be to blame, right? They didn't actually sit in the rehears

Reading/Workshop/Lab

Readings come first. There are two different types: table reads and staged readings. A table read is just what it sounds like - actors sitting around the table and reading the text. There is generally little rehearsal. Maybe a music rehearsal or two if it's a musical, or some private sessions. Some of the time depending on the audience, the composer/lyricist will just sing the score while the actors read the book. In a staged reading, the actors have around a week of rehearsal and present the ma

Wait... is she for real? How can you forget about $65M down the tubes?

I second that. Her show was absolutely amazing. Hilarious, inspiring. I really hope it extends or transfers! LOVE HER!
Change a Show's ENDING- What would you create?

People in the Picture should have ended in the lobby.
2010 OBIE Winners Announced!

For those that are wary of performance art, I highly recommend seeing Taylor Mac's show at Joe's Pub this weekend. He's weird, but very accessible, and Lily's Revenge was one of the best pieces to play in New York in quite some time.
Oliver Broadway Revival?
 May 19 2010, 02:06:41 PM
The US tour actually was the Cameron Mackintosh staging and script, scaled down for touring. It was probably the best non-Equity tour I've seen. I still have no idea why a) they didn't bring this production in, and b) why they don't license this version, which is far better than the original.
Dance class question
 May 19 2010, 11:55:15 AM
BDC is really crowded. Make sure to check the boards at all the rehearsal studios (Ripley Greer, etc.) as they sometimes offer good beginner classes not affiliated with a bigger dance studio. (And are cheaper!)
Has the same source material been adapted twice?
 May 19 2010, 11:51:37 AM
I don't know if this counts, but I'm really looking forward to Ryan Scott Oliver's Peter Pan adaptation, "Darling." I'm a total nerd for the demos out there.
Memphis, Promises, Promises or Billy Elliot?

Another vote for Billy Elliott.

Does anyone have a download link to the original video? I missed this whole thing, just like the blackface Ragtime.

This thread still freaks me out after all these many months. Celebrities are people too!

Will copies of his sex tape be on sale in the lobby?
The Scottsboro Boys will play the Lyceum...

On one hand, I'm excited to see this show because I missed it at the Vineyard and am curious about the "lost" Kander and Ebb musical. But on the other hand, I saw Curtains. Wah wah.

Dude, I saw it. It was my senior year. And it was insane. Especially the part where everyone took communion off of Alex Brightman's naked body.

It didn't specifically take place inside an insane asylum. There was some convoluted explanation of the set and why they were bald in the program, but insane asylum it wasn't. You must be getting this one confused with the production of South Pacific that Anne Bogart directed at NYU that took place in a veteran's hospital! (Which was way more successful than Hair, FYI.)

As far as the show goes, not a lot landed, but it looked cool and there were some great arrangements of the songs.

Heathurr2, AKB's blog says it's Randy Blair who wrote Perez Hilton at the Fringe this year. Dunno if he reads BWW, but if so, good work. :)
