Well, you seemed a little surprised that Boyd Gaines had won the Tony Award three times.
I was just providing with what I thought was FURTHER astounding information--that EVERY time he's nominated, he wins!

CONGRATULATIONS on yet ANOTHER T.P. win!!!
YES, of course MISS LIBERTY (1949) with a score by Irving Berlin and Book by Robert Sherwood used the story of France gifting the Statute of Liberty to America as a basis for its plot.
Although the characters contained some genuine historical figures such as newspaperman Joseph Pulitzer, the story the musical told was 99.99% Fiction.

According to the IBDB, that would have been David Burtka.
As for being "too young" for 'Joey'--I think the role usualy calls for someone in his late twenties/early thirties--old enough "to have been around" but still "young enough" to charm somebody like 'Vera'.

I ALSO think PAL JOEY is a SPLENDID Musical--Indeed, one of my favorites.
But for JOEY to work--it needs TOP-NOTCH Casting for both 'Vera' and 'Joey'.
Perhaps if someone along the lines of Glenn Close or Meryl Streep for 'Vera', and for 'Joey' [Part does not REALLY require a trained voice], and well, my mind escapes me at the minute of a male dancer with the looks, "charm" and has the right "dancing stuff" to carry off the part.

But "The Merm" NEVER missed a performance, sabrelady--that was not her "style". Her standbys/understudies NEVER went on. Stritch NEVER played "Mrs. Sally Adams" until the National Touring Company of CALL ME MADAM.

Coward initialy wrote the song "Sail Away" for the moderately succesful British Musical--ACE OF CLUBS--which never played in America.
In 1961, he decided to build an entire satirical musical about the fads and fobiles of people traveling--and engaged Elaine Stritch to play a caustic cruise hostess.
It was THE first Coward musical to open on Broadway BEFORE playing in the West End.
Out of town reviews were DREADUL--the only things people liked were Stritch, and the Cowa
