I saw a talkback with Lonny Price after a screening when it was out in New York and he said his original plan was to include all of the original cast members in the film, but he found (like Sondheim and Prince did with the original production of MERRILY) that he had to focus in on a smaller number of characters to keep the storytelling clear.
