Dorothy Parker on Hollywood

Sep 21, 2019 — 5:35:18 PM

Dorothy Parker loved writing for the Broadway theater where she had only minimal success. In Hollywood, she had major success, including an Academy Award nomination for the original version of A Star Is Born, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Despite the accolades, she hated tinsel town. Read her side-splitting description by clicking the link below.https://normanmathewsauthor.com/dorothy-parker-in-hollywood/

We'll just say it was not a pretty experience and didn't bode well for a future career.https://normanmathewsauthor.com/the-4-year-olds-first-dance-classlass/

Embezzling a Famed Broadway Producer

Thanks. I agree. The untold stories of Broadway. But even this one is still not truly discernible because Cheryl Crawrford, I believe, was too humiliated by it to be truly forthcoming.

Point well taken—word changed. Who knew that so many theatre lovers knew the fine points of the legal definitions of words?

I also would love to know more, but unless someone tracks down Richard Chandler, there's not much chance of it. I've tried to learn about him but find absolute nothing.

Swindling a Famed Broadway Producer

May 14, 2019 — 11:04:19 AM

Sometimes the intrigues percolating off stage are more compelling than what's on stage. And often, these backstage sagas are never, or barely, reported in the press. Here's an inside look at one good example.https://normanmathewsauthor.com/embezzling-a-famed-broadway-producer-an-inside-look/

Dorothy Parker on Racism, Socialism, and Fascism

Apr 1, 2019 — 8:56:52 PM

Dorothy Parker, the Jazz-Age high priestess of the bon mot, is scarcely thought of as a political activist. Yet so many of her political beliefs resonate in today’s tumultuous world. In her Broadway plays, politics was never a theme, despite the fact that her first Broadway effort, Close Harmony, was written in collaboration with Elmer Rice, author of the expressionist play, The Adding Machine. How fortunate you were to have worked with Julie Harris. I always assumed she was never a diva. I wish I could have known her.

Julie Harris: A Letter From Rome

I also enjoyed Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, though I had some problem with Jennifer Jason Leigh's portrayal. It was so glum that one wondered how Dorothy Parker could have been, along with Fanny Brice, one of the most celebrated people in New York during the Jazz Age. Interestingly, Tony-Award-Winner Michele Pawk, who was workshopping my Dorothy Parker musical while she was appearing in Cabaret with Jennifer Jason Leigh felt the same way. In fact, she refused to discuss it with Jennife...

Julie Harris: A Letter From Rome

I became reminded of this letter just recently as I was writing my autobiography, and I thought that Julie Harris admirers would be interested in seeing her handwriting. Also, it's very unusual for a star of her caliber to have taken the time to write such a personal note, while she's busy working.Sorry, I forgot to attach the link to the letter in my initial post. Here it is:https://normanmathewsauthor.com/julie-harris-a-letter-from-rome/
