While I agree it used to be more canny and distorted, sound design has come a long way.  I do think that the type of music has changed too.  The range for men has gotten so much higher, and with a mic it can be sung more in a head voice and still be heard.  This Merman belting and sliding up to every note is just not acceptable these days.  People I think are more technically trained today.  To use different resonating spaces and their bodies more than just abs to rea
