TNT has been running "Father of the Bride" Parts One and Two this weekend and every time I watch this movie, it makes me remember what great films they are. Not revolutionary, just one of those great family films that make you feel all warm inside.

I know that Rick Elise and Marshall Brickman of JERSEY BOYS fame have annouced that they are adapting the film for the stage and I was wondering how they plan to go about it. It says they plan to adapt the 1950 original, but I would love to see a combination of the original and remake. For instance, Martin Short's character is an absolute scene stealer in the movies and would make a fabulous featured part in the musical.

Plus, I feel the remake lends itself to musicalization more. When Steve Martin literally addresses the audience by looking straight at the camera and his many voiceovers would work well on stage.

I'm wondering who plans to do write the music and how it will be stylized. I would love Shaiman and Wittman to helm the project but they're already busy with CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. I was thinking possibly David Yazbeck would do a good job with it.

As far as director's go...I'd love to see someone like Scott Ellis or Michael Greif handle it.

Here's the link to the original article if anyone's interested:

I'd love to hear your opinions.

Catch Me If You Can's songs have all been written already. There is a demo. When is that supposed to happen, btw?

I'd love to write this.
Or
JRB?

Maybe Comden & Green.
Or whoever wrote The Drowsy Chaperone. The telegram lady. re: Father of the Bride - The Musical

OR ADAM GUETTEL

Yes but Shaiman and Wittman still have to go through the process of workshops and rehersals and mounting the show which could take quite a while.

JRB might do a good job.

As much as I love Guettel, I'm not sure about him. He writes some gorgeous ballads, but "Father of the Bride" is a comedy (if they write it the way I think they will). For some reason I can't see Guettel's music fitting with a show like this.

Also, I'd like to see it before I'm on social security...and the way Guettel writes...that wouldn't be likely.

And you do know both Comden and Green have passed on, right?

Yeah. There was one Catch workshop that Mitchell directed, wasn't there? Seriously, anyone know? I don't feel like searching. WannaBeAFoster?!

I was kidding about C&G and Guettel, actually.

I would do a fantastic job and JRB probably would too, though. 13 is a lot lighter and (LB moment) funner than Parade, haha.

Oh. What I have must have been recorded with that cast. I can definetely recognize Lane's voice. It has all the songs you listed, too, if I'm not mistaken.

Miss Congeniality the musical, anyone?

I was watching the movies today and was thinking the same thing. The original would be lovely as a musical, but the remake would be so much fun!

Only this time, let's make the bride a lesbian, and her dad will be hootin' and hollerin' about planning and financing her gay wedding.

No, seriously. I'm so tired of wedding themed shows that promote opposite sex marriage. That's so been done to death. Who's to say a musical can't take place in Vermont?

The baffled ensemble:

Nothing ever happens in Blaine!
Nothing like this
Nothing like that
Nothing like lesbians
Buying a flat

Next door to the mayor
and his heterosexual wife;
We're raised to be
Sheltered for life

It's almost a pain
To sing this refrain
And nightly complain
To tourists who feign
To care for mundane
Melodic disdain
But still we maintain
We'll never abstain;
Forever campaign
And try to explain
Why we're singing in rain

See this is big news,
very big news,
because
NOTHING EVER HAPPENS
IN BLAIIIIIIIIINE!
