2003 Broadway World Round Up

Well, Dearies, another year is coming to a close. Let’s hope 2004 brings world peace and peace to Broadway World. We have had a lot of great threads this year, so in keeping with the critic’s end of year tradition, may I offer my:

”SUELEEN GAY'S TOP TEN THREADS/TOPICS/EVENTS OF 2003” on BroadwayWorld.com.

In no particular order:

HOW WILL PJ EVER GET TICKETS TO GYPSY? Ticket master was being so uncooperative that our little PJ gave us an hour-by-hour account of his long struggle to get tickets to see Bernadette. Some posters were helpful, some annoyed. I believe it prompted one of the many “If you don’t care, don’t read it!” rants of the year. Happy to report that not only did our little PJ get his tickets, he also got to meet Bernie after the show. (See photo in fan photo section)

SHILLS, SHILLS AND MORE SHrILLS! One of the newest and best Broadway message boards became a huge billboard for self-promotion. Everything from TABOO to MY COUSIN WANDA TAKES A DUMP (“The audience was rolling in the aisles with tears streaming down their faces…not from the stench coming from the stage, but from the hilarity issuing from it…for information call …”) was promoted by people who have never posted here before or since. But with the SHILL POLICE on patrol, we were able to smell these hucksters right off the bat.

ELIA KAZAN-SATAN OR ARTISTE EXTRODINAIRE? Upon the death of the great director, we had a lovely chat as to whether you can separate the artist from his actions. No clear victor in that debate, but a good one non-the-less. YOU CAN…you can’t…YOU CAN…you can’t…

SHEEKALA’S HOT ICONS Too hot for some, just a warm up for others. The book BEST OF SHEEKALA’S ICONS is now available at your favorite adult bookstore.

ALBIN VS DOLLYPOP What a feud. No two people have ever been so in love, as his Dollypop and him. Has the term ‘Masking your true feelings” ever been so apropos? We thinks not. So, do a rep tour of TWHM with you know who as Dolly and you know who else as Horace, and TWGM with …well, you get the idea. Just get a room and get it over, already. Jeesh!

A HORSE IS A HORSE OF COURSE OF COURSE. Out to pasture? Or just animorphing into …oh, never mind.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS The “I am through with this board forever…till my next post” posts. Some are gone for good, or at least for now, but some were just having a bad day and decided to stay. How are you feeling, Bronte?

THE SEANY FAN CLUB You know who you are. You know you love him and wish him, well…happiness, success and about five more years!

OLDER/YOUNGER We are all here to share a common interest and I can tell you I was shocked to learn how young some of you are. I have had very intelligent correspondences with a lot of you and had no idea you were all so young. Although the Broadway Nail Polish thread was a new low for this board, I hope we continue to educate and acknowledge and embrace our differences. I am glad for a younger perspective here. But that URINETOWN YELLOW nail polish does nothing for my complexion.

ROBBD’S DEVOTION Robb and Craig and everyone else who helps keep this board so fun and fair and challenging. Bulldog’s quizzes, Patti’s reviews, Anthony’s quirky point of view…

So, what are your favorite memories of 2003?

Happy New Year to all.

Sueleen Gay

PEACE.

Great picks, Sueleen!! I actually like the Albin- DollyPop feud.

Hmmm... How about voiceanth's Jessica Simpson obsession. That was talked about quite frequently, I do recall.

My Personal 2003 Broadway World Round Up

Suellen~ YOU get my vote for 1.) best photo icon, best sense of timing and humor, best overall attitude and the ability to make fluids spurt from my nose on several occassions! God Bless You, ole gal.

David Megg~ gets my vote for the BEST POST OF THE YEAR with his recent "Don't Know What to Make of This" thread that introduced the world to "WING"! Eternally grateful to you for that!

Mr. Roxy~ For his unyielding patience and endurance in the face of Namo's constant personal battering, with his ever present " have a nice day" rebuttle. Good Form! And a Purple heart to you!

Broadway Guy~ I'd like to say you really need to be harnessed...but I think that would only encourage you! I will NOT forgive you referring to me as being old enough to own a pet T-Rex, young man.

Namo~ you remind me of the trick birthday candle that keeps flaming up after you've been blown it out several times. You've got a sharp tongue and an insulting attitude. But deep down inside I know there's a really, really intelligent wacko.

Rob~ if you get any brighter, we will need shades just to walk with you. You have created a great place here and that has taken a ton of time and hard work and help from great guys like Craig and Chris, and Kris. You done good son! My formers are greener than Idina and foolish for not sharing the bounty. Truly their loss. Thank you for taking a chance with me. And thanks to those who have supported me with kind comments, (your checks are in the mail) and taken me in their confidence. It's a great feeling to help others feel good about themselves.

I want to take this time to salute all the young people on this board! I work with lots of teens with Broadway stars in their eyes and even raised two myself. It ain't easy! Hats Off! to all of you for your love of the theater. Never stop beleiving in yourself. Seek out those smarter than you and learn from them.

Wishing you all health, happiness and success, in that order for the New Year.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy to ALL!

What about the Julianna's Journal extravaganza? Anorexia, bad spelling, bitter queens coming out of the woodwork, goodtimes.

And Miriam's wonderful stories. That's in the top 3.

I haven't gotten to hear any of Miriam's stories yet. I know there was a post requesting some recently. Something for me to look forward to I guess.re: re: re: My Personal 2003 Broadway World Round Up

Ladies and gentlemen....the slapdowns between...in this corner, "Bernadette's Brawlers!" ...and in THIS corner..."Marissas's Maulers!"

The remake of LADY IN A CAGE starring Kerry Butler, and featuring Al Dente!
"Christ, Bette Davis?!?!"

I have to agree......Wing was incredible.

Might I mention the various Kerry Butler bashing threads....those were quite interesting.

And the threads addressing vocal technique vs. amplification

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: My Personal 2003 Broadway World Round Up

Looking back on life in the Broadwayworld village during 2003, memories flood.

I did love the Juliana Battle At Helm's Deep. It was v. v. funny. And never had I been called a "rat's ass cretin" until then. It rocked.

Onceadancer. Whatatreasure. For those of you who never got to participate in the now defunct broadway.com message board, Miriam's posts were a high point. I remember one particular thread about the climate of 30's/40's Broadway in regard to gays. Should be text book reading.

And a special memory to all those that joined the company during the course of the year...all those that bring their own special voice to the merriment: Mister Matt, Sueleen, JohnPopa, Voiceanth, et al. I always enjoy reading those guys. Might not always agree, but I enjoy reading them. I'm a sucker for intelligence.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: My Personal 2003 Broadway World Round Up

I'm new here, and missed about half of the titillating threads Sueleen provided stunning precis for. But her savvy summation brought me up to speed. It was like getting Cliff Notes for "The Best of Everything" in your stocking.

One question, wasn't Linda Muggleston in MY COUSIN WANDA TAKES A DUMP? No, not the workshop at the Michael Bennett studios, but when it was first done at the Cherry Lane? With Bryan Batt absolutely unforgettable as the plumber? Does anyone here have a bootleg of the final performance? I haven't bought my present for Ken Mandlebaum yet.

What about me?

re: re: re: Gracias

I was explicitly sexually propositioned by several board members (no names, please, you know who you are). Quiz Masters can have that appeal! (To quote Shakespeare, "age cannot whither...") I'm starting to create quizes on many other sites now. (Just kidding, Rob.)

Superb job Sueleen, and thank you for your very lovely personal note, too. (No, Sueleen was not one to whom I referred.)

The most gratifying aspect for me is to open just one mind over the course of the year to Broadway's long glorious history of the theatre, and to the many talents that truly made the word Broadway synomynous with quality.

Yours for a better Broadway in 2004!
