I have it. Theres also a concert version but the one I own was filmed on stage at *I believe* the Gershwin (aka The Uris). If we're talking about the same thing, its absolutley wonderful and definitley worth buying.

Are you talking about the DVD of Lansbury and Hearn and much of the original Broadway cast filmed live in performance on the road back in '79? It's a classic and a must-own, preserving Hal Prince's landmark Tony-winning original production.

There's also a concert film with LuPone and Hearn that's good.

And Sam Mendes is in pre-production for an actual film version of the musical that should begin filming sometime later this year.

Your link is for one of the film versions of the non-musical play, not the Sondheim musical. The legend of Sweeney Todd goes back to the 19th century and has been filmed a few times over the years. That version was pretty good as I recall, but again it's not a musical.

Sam Mendes is working on the completion of another film to premiere this November 11. JARFISH.

We should know more about the film in the coming months. We don't know if he is directing it yet - but his production company is doing it. Most likely - he is directing.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
