Why do some shows like The Lion King and the 2001 revival of 42nd Street give out Showbills instead of Playbills?

Very good question. I've wondered that too. I don't have the answer, but I'm curious to know if anyone does know.

The only thing I can come up with is that these shows have some deal with the company that produces "Showbill" instead of "Playbill" Magazine, that we receive at most shows.

I'm assuming any NY show has to pay Playbill magazine a fee to provide copies of their magazine with the info regarding their show to hand out as programs. So maybe these shows got a better deal through Showbill?

Playbill and Showbill are sister companies.

Playbill is less expensive to use than Showbill.
The differences are that Playbill is uniform amongst all of the shows using it that month except for the center pages that are production specific. Showbill can be customized by the producers and production to really focus on that production or to eliminate mention of competitors is wanted. It is all a matter of whether more control of content is desired and worth the cost to the production.

"We reported incorrectly that Phantom of the Opera would be raising top ticket prices to $80.00. It just goes to show you, you can't believe everything you read in the papers. They are not changing the prices at all, but Rent will be hiking their prices as of June 30th to a top of $80.00 for weekend performances. "

It's sad when you wish the top price for a Broadway show is $80.
