#0Chicago-What kind of idiot is this?
Posted: 1/25/06 at 12:19amI saw chicago last night, and had an increible time. There was a disturbing thing that happened outside after the show. After I met John O'Hurley, Robin Givens came out and started signing. Some moron had a picture of her with her ex-husband Mike Tyson. She did not sign it and you could tell she was somewhat disturbed by it.She shook it off and continued signing but it was a bad situation. Why would somebody do that if they knew the hell she went through in that stage of her life.I have a sister that was in an abusive relationship and that is why I was so upset by it.I mean honestly, what kind of idiot is this?

I'm gonna say he'd plead ignorance and had no idea they were divorced.
Otherwise - I don't know what to say.
(Even so, that's a weird thing to get signed.)
#5re: Chicago-What kind of idiot is this?
Posted: 1/25/06 at 12:36amI not only didn't know they were divorced - I didn't know they'd ever been married. Or any part of their history. I've never followed that kind of stuff. Believe me - ignorance is entirely possible.

No offense but some people here must be living under rocks not to know the story.
And it could be assumed the guy wanted that picture autographed to possibly sell, or to 'own' a peice of boxing/celebrity history, etc...

I hate to say it but SHE married him (Like he was EVER attractive??) and had she not, You wouldn't be asking for an autograph today but saying "Robin WHO?"
That marriage gave Sister her career.

Posted: 1/25/06 at 12:54amNo offense - but I don't live in a cave. I also don't read People magazine or watch Entertainment tonight or anything like it. Simply because I have no interest in it and there's tons of other things out there that I am interested in. A stranger's personal life just doesn't happen to be one of those interests.

The guy was probably an autograph dealer. It is usually rare for celebrities to sign photos of them with ex-spouses, etc. or in risque poses, so if Givens would have signed it for him/her, the person probably could've made a nice little amount of money off of it.

I think she was pretty well known when she married him.
There was a Barbara Walters special years back when they were on together. He was pretty scary. I think they talked about him being violent, and it being a living hell.
There as an interview with Oprah (surprise) where they discuss the issue:
"When Robin Givens and Mike Tyson sat down with Barbara Walters in September 1989 to confront the rumors that their marriage was in trouble, millions watched. When asked if Mike ever hit her, Robin skirted the issue, saying "He shakes. He pushes. He swings."
Oprah: Do you regret the interview?
Robin: Well, I think that I was in no state to really sit and do anything and try to handle it. You know, I was such a precocious kind in the sense that [I thought] "I can handle it. I can make it work. I can go talk to the doctor and I'm going to save him and he's going to take medicine." I couldn't handle anything.
Oprah: You were pretty vilified at the time. … Let's address the gold digging.
Robin: This is what I would say about the gold digging: If I was digging gold, I had dug and hit the jackpot. There wasn't anything I wanted that I couldn't have. … You can't drive all those cars. I couldn't wear all those diamonds. … And if I was digging gold…why the hell, excuse me, would I leave [with nothing?] I didn't leave with pennies. I didn't leave my house with anything. I just left."

Mamie, do you not read a newspaper, any kind of periodical, never have the radio on, never seen a TV, or never seen the news on the internet?
I know of no one that did not know the story, unless possibly they were some Romas hidden in Romanian caves or living in a defenct subway stop in Budapest.
Your inference that people ONLY read People or watch ET is insulting to say the least. I read neither of those, I prefer the NY Times, Desert Sun, and Eugene Register Guard which I read daily. I also read Time, Newsweek, and Library Journal and School Library Journal.
And yet, I paid attention to this story because is dealt with violence towards women, which upsets me to no end.
If you did not know about this, you were either a child at the time (which I am pretty sure you were not), or.....you live in a cave.
I've always enjoed your posts....but frankly I found this one condescending and rude.....and you could have said then same thing in a non-abrasive way.

Regardless of whether or not her marriage and relationship should be public knowledge or not, the person who did this OBVIOUSLY knew about the relationship. Why else would he even HAVE that picture, or want it to be signed? It was a rude, sensationalistic thing to do.
Even if we assume he didn't know about the divorce, or the rockiness of the marriage, who the hell carries a PICTURE of someone with their husband, and ask for it to be autographed?
It's just rude.

Posted: 1/25/06 at 5:23amMy point is - If she never married him - there would be no vareer today. She was not a BIG BIG sought after celeb when this happened so the press did her well. She is still most known for that relationship. Say what you will but it is the sad ugly truth. What did she do before? "The women of brewster place"?? William Morris' Boys were NOT making a knock at her door and she got a LOT of press marrying the (then) "Celeb Champ". I remember it well.

Elphaba - I was told that I must be living in a cave not to have known about these two. I was insulted by that allegation. I explained that I do not live in a cave. I read the front pages of the Washington Post and the New York Times every day. I also read the metro sections of these papers. I do not have the time or desire to get into the other sections. I'm sorry you read this as an insulting reply. It is simply a statement of fact. I don't seek these stories out and I assume that's why I know nothing about them.
I'm sincerely sorry that you read my defense of myself against the insult I received in such a negative way. "I know of no one that did not know the story, unless possibly they were some Romas hidden in Romanian caves or living in a defenct subway stop in Budapest." Well, now you know someone who does read newspapers, and who neither lives in Romanian caves nor defunct subway stops in Budapest. I can hardly wait for the criticism I'll receive for this message!

Totally off topic.
Why is John O'Hurley famous? He seems like kind of a tool. Is his small role in Seinfeld/ Dancing with Celebrities so awesome that we must give him a broadway lead. Honestly, when producers start bringing in famous names to fill seats...it's a sure sign the show will be done soon.
Get your Sweeney tickets now....before Joey Fatone gets his hands on the role.

Different people pay attention to different things. I know a University Professor who can not tell you a single musical or song that Sondheim has written. (I can already hear the collective gasps of horror!) There are people who don't know when the Super Bowl is and who is playing, there are people who don't know what movies are in the running for Oscars this year, I'm pretty sure my father has no idea that Julia Roberts had twins (or that Robin Givens and Mike Tyson were married, for that matter) -- they've probably been "exposed" to those pieces of news, but it's in-one-ear-and-out-the-other because it's not important to them. And the Mike Tyson-Robin Givens marriage happened almost 20 years ago, so it could slip out of memory.
But I agree that whether or not we know about their marriage, it's clear that the autograph seeker knew, so his behavior is pretty shameful.
And I don't understand the concept that Robin Givens is most famous for marrying Mike Tyson and therefore she should have signed. There are people who are famous for something unfortunate that happened to them (the model whose face got slashed comes to mind) -- that doesn't necessarily mean that they are happy that it happened or want to be reminded of it. Kato Kaelin probably owes all of his income over the past 10 years to Nicole Simpson being murdered, but that doesn't mean he's glad it happened.

Here is my summary.
She had a career before she married him.
She was vilified after the Barbara Walters interview, and if anything, became infamous, and not famous - it damaged her reputation tremendously.
She is a talented and bright woman, who got out of an abusive relationship.
None us know whether the marriage Tyson actually hurt or helped her career.
Not everyone may have been aware of her marriage and the tabloid headlines associated with it -
Except of course for the ass that sought the autograph.

Btw some of oyu need to remember the Tyson / Givens thing was a LONG time ago. I mean i am 30 and i remember it but not VERY well.
People on here who are 18 - 23 are probably not gonna know it.
But yeah that was a VERY unclassy thing to do.

First things first: kasim, I'm not thrilled with the photo change!
But BroadwayChica is right--the autograph seeker totally knew that they had been married and no doubt also knew that it ended badly. Just tacky and stupid.
And I think Tyson's kinda hot, so I can see why she went for him.
She was on HEAD OF THE CLASS as well, but I'm not sure how that fits in time-wise with her marriage.

Bravo, YWIW!! Thanks for the succint and - IMHO - accurate summary.
And that jerk at the stage door needs to have his head examined. Would you go up to Tina Turner and ask her to sign a photo of her and Ike? Well, maybe some morons would, but again, that would be IDIOTIC.

lol sorry lildogs is this photo any better?
btw my comment about not knowing about it. Was in regards to people on this board asking what the deal was. NOT the person giving the photo of tyson and her, i am sure HE/SHE was well aware of it.
