Not sure why this is making news now (I guess because the show just opened in Australia) but Keycomp is used all over the place, on many Disney and non-Disney shows. The Lion King US tour uses it, the Toronto company used it, etc. This isn't unique to the Sydney company.

The animatronic is the gimmick. If the West End production was using a "hat with ears", we wouldn't be talking about this show right now.
The show is too expensive to make sense on Broadway.

No the original design doesn't exist anymore. The West End production and the US tour don't have the larger curved taverna walls that were automated, the light up floor or the raising dock.
