Ok...so i'm not there.
Still stuck in Boston..
But a friend of mine is...
He's at intermission...and I guess is one of the few staying. Apparently, the show is still a mess.
He'll be back to post a full review later. Ring of Fire 2/21

Can it be? Is there going to be a jukebox musical worse than Good Vibrations or Lennon?

I think its just a mess because it has now through line to it. There's no story to rely upon. Even Lennon had a through line, as did Good Vibrations. Its basically just a concert, not musical theater. Its not telling any sort of story, I think that's where they went wrong.

I thought the point was that the songs themselves are sung in a particular order that tells a story, or that each song is a separate story in itslef (my take) making a "book"unnecessary. I've never seen a production provoke such a mixed reception. The critical reception is going to be very interesting. Has Cass Morgan returned to the show? She was out at the first preview.

I haven't seen it yet, but I doubt it would be lack of story. Smokey Joe's Cafe just used songs of Leiber & Stoller without telling any sort of story, and that ran for 5 years, 2000+ performances.

It would be nice to see a Maltby show run for 5 years! re: Ring of Fire 2/21

I saw this show Saturday matinee. I didn't really enjoy it (I tried---but was bored silly). The second act seemed a bit better. (maybe because I knew the end was near---I actually found myself counting down --- knowing there were 16 songs in the second act). According to the producer's statements---there is an overall story----very subtle and he felt that the audience would be sophisticated enough to pick up on it. For example---the opening song was the last that Cash recorded and the last song was the first. Well, I guess I'm not one of the sophisticated ones---because to me it was just a collection of nice Cash songs performed by good singers and good musicians, but no linking thread---so, after you've heard one......(just my opinion)
By the way---my husband really enjoyed it and said he'd see it again-----(so I guess it's me)
