Hopefully no one's posted this topic yet but if they have, sorry!
I don't have any recordings of Sweeney Todd yet (I know, I know, what's wrong with me lol) and I'm debating about which of the three major recordings to get (original cast, live at the New York Philharmonic or new Broadway). I know the new one isn't released on CD until tomorrow but I'm just looking for some opinions on which one people seem to enjoy most so I can try and make a decision :o) Thanks.........

Original for me was must have and of course tomorrow is the revival release which I'm going on a lunch period to get. I need this one so badly.
I really don't find many redeeming qualities about the NY concert recording, just wasn't too much of a fan of it I guess

Posted: 1/30/06 at 3:22pmI am in a similar boat...although I have been a fan of Sweeney Todd for a long time--it is actually one of the few shows that I don't have a recording of (long story). Anyway...after much debate I think I am leaning towards getting the revival CD tomorrow. The reason is because I have the DVD of the original production so I can watch that anytime I need to hear Lansbury and the original orchestrations.

If you haven't seen the revival then buy the OBC.
If you have seen the revival then buy the revival cast

Maybe rent the DVD if you can to hear and see the original.

The OBC is an essential recording for any show music collection.
The new revival is an interesting alternate, but start with the original.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
