Avenue Q tony noms?

I love avenue q (u can tell by my name QFan). But, I'm afraid that it'll be overshadowed by the newer huge musicals like Wicked(great musical not as good as q though), Bombay Dreams, and others, come tony nomination time. I believe its the best new musical of the 2003-04 season( i was lucky enough to see the 4th performance way back in early august)
I know it should win best book, Actor(John Tartaglia),Supporting Actor(Rick Lyon) and some other awards. It does deserve best new musical but you know that since wicked is such a hit and almost every musical to win that title has gone to be huge on tours...Can you imagine avenue q in your home town ::faints::.
It will be interesting in May when they are announced

Welcome, fellow Q-head!
I have similar concerns about the shows' Tony chances. As much as I love John, I do think the award is Hughs'.
I wonder if it's still too special a show to win Best Musical, but I think its chances for Best Score are excellent.

"Welcome, fellow Q-head!"
Wouldn't that make him a Q-tip?

It wouldn't surprise me to see 'Avenue Q' lose Best Score to 'Taboo.' I'm not *predicting* that but it wouldn't surprise me, either. I'd say 'Q' has a good shot at Best Book but that could just as easily go to 'Wicked.'
Unfortunately, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that 'Avenue Q' might find itself out in the cold come Tony night, either, in terms of big wins.

Posted: 2/5/04 at 3:43pmI think Avenue Q will win Best Score (I can see Taboo also winning) and the Book go to Wicked. Wicked is more a traditional musical, but very original and such a spectacular- This is why I think Wicked will win the Tony for Best Musical. I cant compare Avenue Q and Wicked- they are both so different and both so amazing at the same time!! Gary Coleman should get a Tony for Best Featured Actress! At least this years Tonys will be exciting, instead of like last year where you could almost predict everything.

Posted: 2/5/04 at 3:43pmI think Avenue Q will definatly be nominated for Best Musical and Best Book, hands down!

I hope Avenue Q wins over Wicked. I liked WIcked, but Avenue Q has definitely won me over!
And I don't see Wicked winning a Tony Award for their book. It was cute, but it can't compare with some of the other shows out there.

The book is the best part of Wicked. Come on, the script is very witty and clever with twists, tears, and huge laughs- its not just the actor's performances.
Well If I could have it my way- Avenue Q would win Best Musical, Wicked Best Book, and Taboo or Avenue Q Best Score. But Bombaby Dreams might send all on a run for their money...

Really, Best Book is NOT just 'Best Dialogue.' The 'Wicked' book juggles a complex plot and many people have thought the book is what is carrying the show's success, moreso than the score.
Again, I'm not predicting anything but I could see a lot of voters picking 'Wicked's book over 'Avenue Q's which *could* be seen as just cute dialogue but not more than that.

Posted: 2/5/04 at 4:14pmThis years Tonys is going to be a little like 2002's- Urinetown vs. Millie. Avenue Q vs. Wicked. But then again, I know nothing of Bombay Dreams or Caroline, or Change- these two shows may be incredible.

I think the Tony for Best Book will probably go to Kushner for Caroline, or Change.

At this point, I think AVENUE Q's best Tony chances are in the award for Best Score.
As its chances for Best Musical go, it may be judged too jokey-campy in the PRODUCERS-HAIRSPRAY mold, and CAROLINE or TABOO may attract those Tony voters who favor less mainstream fare.

I think AVENUE Q should definitely win for best score, and possibly even best book. WICKED's book was muddy and sometimes confusing, with an occasional laugh referencing the film thrown in. Kristen's delivery of a lot of the laughs were better than most of the jokes themselves. WICKED could give AVE Q a run for its money in the score category. Although, I've seen AVE Q twice and have listened to the CD over and over again, and it STILL makes me laugh. I have a feeling the Tony voters will have a similar experience. AVENUE Q has cleverness, wit, and fabulous vocal arrangements in it's favor, whereas WICKED is a traditional pop score. WICKED's score has some wonderful, thrilling moments, but so many of the songs end with yelling over substance. The only thing going for TABOO's score are the gorgeous ballads, and that's not quite enough to snag the Tony, this year anyway.
Regarding Best Actress, Kristen and Idina could very well cancel each other out, leaving room for the marvelous Stephanie D. from AVENUE Q. All three of these women are Tony-worthy. If I could choose, Stephanie would take it. I think Idina is the longshot of the 3.
I agree that Hugh Jackman has had this Tony wrapped up since his show opened. But then again, they said the same thing about Brian S. Mitchell in RAGTIME, and he lost it to Alan Cumming. John T. from AVENUE Q is most definitely Tony-worthy. Euan from TABOO is also dynamite, but will be overshadowed by Hugh and John T. I think he is the strongest shot for a Tony for TABOO.
I wish they'd do what Harvey Fierstein said in his acceptance speech for HAIRSPRAY, and give an ensemble award, because AVENUE Q would win hands down. What a talented cast!
Featured Actor & Actress: Carole Shelley for WICKED, and Rick Lyon from AVENUE Q. The guy who plays Motel in FIDDLER was also topnotch. (Sorry, program not handy. I think his name is John...).
Best Musical: If I could vote, I'd go for AVENUE Q because it's the whole package. However, WICKED could take it because of the spectacle. (Remember LION KING vs. RAGTIME? What a shocker that was!)

When i saw Q it was the day after I saw Millie for the first time(a great musical) and i was jsut hoping it to be great, It was. I want it to win some damn tonys

There is no way on God's Green Earth that TABOO will ever win Best Score... if for some fluk that would to ever happen, I'll run naked through Times Square. It is one of the worst, disjointed, and rancid scores ever to hit a Broadway stage.
Ave Q is genius but I doubt it will win against the behemoth Wicked.
