Has anybody watched the pbs "broadway the american musical" that Julie Andrews hosts? I know... I'm a total geek, but I found it really facinating, especially the early history which I wasn't as familiar with. Amazing to see all the different starts, producers and writers that helped make broadway what it is today.

I own the DVDs as well. I love them, and I learned a ton from them. The RENT segment makes me cry, though. re: LOL PBS Julie Andrews Special

I have the DVDs, as well. Love the early stuff, less enthusiastic about that last segment, which just bores the hell out of me. It's a wonderful history, though.

I loved it. Why LOL though?

ashley0139... cause I never thought I'd admit I loved something off PBS. It is broadway though.. so TOTALLY different right? The phrase.. yeah, on Friday night I watched this really great PBS documentary" just doesn't register "cool".
I don't care though. I love my B way!

Hey, PBS is amazing.

Watching a wonderful PBS documentry sounds like a good Friday night to me. Where would I be without my Broadway Lost Treatures?

I watched it and loved it for the most part. Very informative and interesting, and I loved seeing some footage from these older shows that are very unaccessible!

Hope I'm not shot for this, but I do hafta say of course Sondheim's an important part of theatre, but I wish they didn't spend sooo much time on him and his shows. I mean, particularly in term of clips b/c so many of his shows are available on VHS/DVD, I would have liked to spend some more of that time on more inaccessible clips.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

I agree. Once they got to Sondheim, the show went down hill. Regardless, it is a fascinating look at the American musical.
