I don't think it's that he can't play a leading role, it's that he struggles with playing dangerous, playing the bad boy.

That doesn't mean he has to play the boy next door all the time. His two best performances in my opinion were Gabe in Next to Normal and Enjolras in Les Miserables, neither of which fit that stereotype. The latter role increased his fan following drastically, despite it being incredibly minor. There were far more people obsessing over Tveit online after the Les Mis movie than there was Eddie Redmayne, despite Marius being a much bigger character. That clearly shows that he can and does have plenty of charisma in certain roles.

However, his two weakest roles from the ones I've seen are Roger in Rent and Danny in Grease, where he plays the reformed bad boy rocker type. Not to say he does a bad job of either, I think it's just the one type of role he shouldn't play. I thought he did the absolute best he could as Danny but his look just didn't suit it. I also think John Travolta gave a performance in the movie that is by far the most iconic of the entire movie's cast, and people who have only been exposed to Grease through the movie were always going to have an issue with whoever played Danny.

I enjoyed him.  But I was distracted by his arms in the scene where he was driving.  Those arms...

He can be on my TV screen any day.

I'd add John Wilkes Booth in Assassins to that, for which he received all around critical praise. I still enjoyed the energy he brought to his dancing in Grease Live, and of course his vocals, though I agree he's probably not as well suited for Danny and Roger type roles (except when they call for an earnest quality or vulnerability). However, rather than boy next door, he actually seems to show the most charisma when portraying characters with a bit of a dark side. (For all that Frank Abagnale Jr. was a con man, he didn't really have an edge.) Especially Gabe and Booth, characters where he showed more...I don't know...sort of a wicked (not a pun haha), or devilish, seductive charm at times?

On a superficial note related back to Grease, the age factor didn't bother me that much, other than during the drive-in scene. It just stood out to me more then. I don't think, however, the hair helped for his overall appearance. I realize they wanted/needed to have a specific "look" but the hair was so severe, for me it added a bit of hardness.

Ugh, yes! I actually saw him as John Wilkes Booth and he was incredible, I don't know why that slipped my mind. Completely agree re: dark side + seductive charm. He can do Fiyero and Link very well, but when he gets to add something a bit more powerful/sinister, he completely thrives.
