The Lion Sleeps Tonight

... and thusfar I've succeeded in avoiding it (but for how much longer ?).

It's not my kind of show, but I wish it well.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

It seems like it should be so many more...just because it's one of those shows that's been there forever.

I avoided it for a long time, I appreciated the theatricality and the score (as with the film) was very good but I have to admit I was bored by act 2.

For me the film score was so much better because there was so much less of it.

It seemed to work so much better in New York, not sure that is still the case now its moved theatres there.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Now it's the other way around in terms of theatres. The Lion King's original home, The New Amsterdam is very beautiful on the inside. However, its new home, The Minskoff, has a very modern look to it that doesn't add to the beauty of the show. I think that the reason why it works better in London now rather then New York is because the Lyceum is a much older theatre and very pretty on the inside. The Minskoff, however, is far from that.

If you wanted to see pictures of the inside of both to get a sense of what I am talking about, go to the show's website. Both the site for the Broadway production and the West End production have a virtual seating chart for their respective theatres.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

I'm a huge fan of the show and have seen it 10 times in different cities, but I must admit that it is only good (for me) if you sit closer to the stage so you can see and appreciate the intracies of the costumes. If you sit far back, or high up the look gets thrown off because most of the time you end up looking at an empty stage.

I prefered it when it was at the New Amsterdam, gorgeous theatre, you felt as though you were going back in time to the glory days. The Minskoff now just has a commercial feel, like youre going to watch a movie at the cineplex in the mall. Pluss I didnt like the recent cuts.

"For me the film score was so much better because there was so much less of it" LOL, mallardo! Yes - my sentiments exactly.

The only songs I like in the score are the handful olf Elton John/Tim Rice songs from the movie. I saw the show at the New Amsterdam early in its run and have never been tempted to see it again. I didn't hate it but I was bored for most of the show - all spectacle and very little substance.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

I have seen the show 3 times now in;

London
Las Vegas
Chicago (US Tour)

However the London production could win hands down for me, as one of the best songs has been cut 'The Morning Report', I think this is the case in New York?

It's amazing that The Lion King has lasted so long in London whereas other Disney shows like Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast have done 2-3 year runs. Its success in London is probably why a UK tour hasn't happened yet.

Speaking of Mary Poppins, it is amazing that it has outrun the London production by almost two years but I wonder if Disney will close it when they have a new show ready or leave it there and have the new show in another theatre?

That's the rumour, though Mary Poppins seems to be doing OK at the moment. The short run of Beauty and the Beast in London surprised me. Good family shows

The song "The Morning Report" was cut from the show along with some other minor changes. The changes were ones that were not needed and I feel were done because Taymore was bored with Spider-Man and needed something to do to keep her busy. They were done on Broadway and from what I understand all other productions as well.

I wonder if this happened just in America with the 'morning report' or it was axed on the West End also?

Mary Poppins isn't going anywhere on Broadway, it just about covers costs in lean times, but rakes it in during the holiday and tourist season.

I think that Morning Report might be axed in London as well considering that they are trying to keep all the productions the same. The reason for it being in the show makes sense, in that they wanted to give the character Zazu a song (he didn't have one in the film.) However, the reasons for ditching the song don't make sense to me at all.

I know, and they even went as far as to include it in the DVD re-release of the film. I dont love the song, but I do miss it, would have rather they cut chow down, that one drives me up the wall.

But to each his own, I loved the film's score, I listen to the CD all the time (and I mean the background music) that was taken and turned into 'Endless Night' and 'Shadowland' which when sung right is a total show stopper.

Lol I was trying to find it's redeeming qualities.... but you've just reminded me of a long few weeks being forced to perform the Lioness hunt and other delights as part of a choir concert *shudder*

Eighteen productions of the The Lion King have been performed in 14 countries across five continents. It has been seen by more than 60 million people worldwide, grossing $4.3 billion and has run for a cumulative 83 years.

Creating the masks and 232 puppets required in the show took 37,000 hours to create - that's over 1,542 days. Annual maintenance of the 20 Grasslands headdresses used in the show requires over 3,000 stalks (or more than 27kg) of grass.

Going off-topic, but on the subject of checking your view seat view, Shrek now offers it on their website for Drury Lane.

Just never seen anyone other than a Disney show do that in a West End venue.
