Joe Iconis Question

I caught a bit of Seth Speaks on Sirius XM this morning, and it was Joe Iconis talking about the path Be More Chill took to Broadway. Joe Iconis mentioned a few times that his shows were never getting produced, and no one seemed to be interested. I'm not a huge fan of his (I do really like the Hit List/Smash music), but it seems like there is some resistance toward him, and I'm not sure I completely understand it. 

Can anyone explain it?
