1896 Today is Flo Ziegfeld's debut as a Broadway producer. It is the opening of The Parlor March at the Herald Square Theatre, which stars Anna Held, his mistress. Ziegfeld's specialty is "glorifying the American girl" in huge Broadway spectaculars throughout the early Twentieth century.

2001 The Kander & Ebb musical The Visit opens a tryout at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, starring Chita Rivera and John McMartin. Plans for a Broadway and then an Off-Broadway production were subsequently put on hold. Heard Chita sing a balad fr this show in here cabaret show at Feinstein's & thought it quite beautiful. Is the show salvageable?

1897 - 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon had written a letter to The New York Sun: “I am eight years old. Some of my friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?” Editor Frank Church wrote the response that was printed for the first time on this day: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist. No Santa Claus? Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay ten times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.”
1917 Variety reports that producer George Tyler has found the new star for his upcoming production of Pollyanna in Rochester, New York. It is Helen Hayes. The headline reads, "Tyler's 17-Year-Old 'Find'" and the article itself states that, "[H]er present manager proclaims her as one of the stars within a very few seasons."
1937 "The Hobbit," by J.R.R. Tolkien, was first published.
On Sept. 21, 1938, a hurricane struck parts of New York and New England, causing widespread damage and claiming more than 600 lives. In mid-September 1999, New York experienced the effect of a hurricane storm on Broadway. Ethel Barrymore had a similar experience in 1938 on this date. It took her 45 minutes to get from her hotel to the theatre, which was only seven blocks away, because of the great New England hurricane. She was performing in Whiteoaks at the Plymouth Theatre in Boston. Even after her unsteady arrival, the show was still delayed for an hour because the gap on the roof from which the skylight had blown off had to be covered. The Producer's Credo, "The show must go on!," (which, by the way, belongs solely to the producer, not to the actor as history has it) probably didn't ring any more true than on this date in theatre history.
1957 - Famed trial lawyer Perry Mason came to TV. The creation of attorney/novelist Erle Stanley Gardner, Perry Mason found fame first as a series of novels, then as a CBS radio series (1943-1955). TV’s Perry Mason, which continued for 9 seasons (TV’s longest-running lawyer series) on CBS, starred Raymond Burr in the lead role. Della Street was played by Barbara Hale.
