Just loading the Maniacs onto the Pod.
Can I get a shout-out for Natalie and the boys?
The "unplugged" version of 'Stockton Gala Days' makes me want to twirl in a field like Stevie Nicks.
that summer fields grow high
we made garland crowns in hiding
pulled stems of flowers from my hair
blue in the stream like none I have seen
apart from dreams that escape me
there was no girl as bold as you

I saw them once. They were fine. But I am SO G-D SICK of hearing Natalie with that moutful of marbles voice of hers singing "You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last,You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last, You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last, You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last, You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last, You know it just won't last, just won't last, You know it just won't last ... " EVERY single time I go to the grocery store.
I have learned to LOATHE her in the intervening years.

In My Tribe is one of my favorite albums and I do not mean CD!
Namo, honey, next time you think you hear Natalie Merchant taunting you in the supermarket, pop a Klonopin, .05mg tablet. Take a deep breath. I promise you--she's not really there.

I'm not saying she's actually there, if she were I'd toss an organic grape at her and say "That's for becoming so twee, post-Maniacs." What I am saying is that an alarming 80% of the time I go to one of those mega-supermarkets that fricking "Just won't last" song is on the PA.
Which poses many interesting points about her post-Maniacal career: 1) there was no point in actually having Muzak Corp re-record the track, it already IS Muzak and b) it's milquetoast assonance that's perfectly safe for lesbian hausfraus to shop by.
I thought it was Just CAN'T Last? And her by far most overplayed track isn't that one, it's Kind & Generous, something even she sort of admits.
And as for the Unplugged album, the stand out track for me is Don't Talk.

I did a search on the lyrics and you're right, pop. I'm not kidding you though, it's always on in the grocery store. And with Natalie's um "unique" pronunciation of vowels, I honestly thought it was "won't."
I will grant you that Ms Merchant is a mushmouth. Oooh, such alliteration.
Patti's is a mushmouth tooo. So's Liza. I guess I'm a mush-mouth hag.
There's nothing wrong with it. I love Natalie and the Maniacs. Ask, bwaysinger, when I found Natalie's Retrospective in Barnes & Noble I did a little happy dance.
