Well, we decided on our itinerary WITHOUT a fight.....
He wants to see Prague (I've been).....I want to see Florence (he's been).......so I did my reasearch, and we're doing those two, and Ljubljana, Slovenia, which is sort of between the two.......Adding a place neither of us has been clinched the deal......
I plan all my own trips from scratch, and love doing it.......this is going to be fun!

Posted: 7/28/05 at 10:11pmWell my job expected me to learn Korean and to be fluent in French so I guess I can add Slovenian to the list.

I hate you, Elphaba.
Well, I suppose I can't hold it against you since you gave me some good tips for my Euro trip! Florence is very pretty - do check out the Accademia, Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio. And the leather products are top-notch. Are you Europass-ing it?

I'll be in Europe the same time as you...probably not a good thing for either of us :)
but I hope you have fun! sounds like you will.

Posted: 7/28/05 at 10:22pmtiff, Slovenia (and the Czech republic) are not part of the Europass program, so unsure on that now. Since we added Ljubljana we're not doing any overnight trains, so we could easily do 2nd class......I'm just starting the planning now.

Posted: 7/28/05 at 10:24pmI would have gladly translated. When I went a few years ago our tour guide was supposed to be bilingual. He couldn't even find a bathroom in France. So I had to take over for the group. It was kind of fun.

Posted: 7/28/05 at 10:26pmwell, Steve was surprised when I asked for butter, in flawless French in a restaurant. It appears to be the one thing I learned long ago

Are you going to hit any of the "gateway" cities while you're there? Check out easyjet.com and ryanair.com. I'm quite sure easyjet.com flies to Ljubljana but I think it may only be from London...
I'm pretty sure it's more convenient to take a guided tour around Europe, but I find the research, planning and price-comparing for each destination and transport to be almost as fun as the trip itself!

exactly Tiff, it's more than half the fun for me. I'm using my Alaska Air Miles, so I can fly British Airways, and we'll fly in to Florence (via London) and then fly back home from Prague (via London). We have enough miles so the flights are free.....which is nice.

Posted: 7/28/05 at 10:40pmkor, I considered England, but decided I really needed to get back to Italy......We did Rome and the Amalfi Coast in 2002....and I fell in love with Italy

Elphaba...
When in Florence -- you really should take an afternoon or morning and go to this little village up the hills -- it is called Fiesole -- simply wonderful -- there are some spectaular roman ruins to wander through (a small village actually), a couple small museuems and a couple great churches (especially the old one up the hill). It is a perfect little "escape" from tourists.
This town is about a 25 minute bus ride up the hills and the views of Florence and the valley are just wonderful. THere are a couple restuarants with outdoor seating overlooking the valley. I forget what bus goes up there -- I'll check when I get home -- it's one of those little tips someone shared with me and I was so thankful -- it was a real highlight of a recent trip to Italy.
PS -- thisis not the killer view, but a nice one as well!

Brdwlyr, you are truly blessed! Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said "When one is tired of Naperville, one is tired of life!"
I'm hoping to get down to Kankakee for one of my rejuvenation weekends- Dinner at Bonanza, Breakfast at White Castle and two nights in Motel 6's finest suite!

thank you KMF, it does look wonderful. Steve is teasing me because I want to see Pisa, and he says the only thing there is "that damn leaning tower"....so maybe this will be a better option.
Brd......Joliet can be fun......
Joe, at least YOU can get fresh white castle! I have to buy them frozen! (my God is that sick, or what?)

Matt......we were going to do Spain along with Paris last yrar, Barcelona, Madried, etc........but we changed it to Strasbourg, and then Switzerland. Spain is on the list......just not sure when. I have to see the Alhambra!
We agreeed that Portugal is NOT on the list........the food there holds no interest for us.
