42yrs ago today, JFK was assasinated

42yrs ago today, JFK was assasinated

I was in 4th grade, in the school cafeteria. Teachers were running around, and many were crying. Someone had killed the President, which no one could believe.
It was a very sad time for America......and when I realized for the first time, that the world could be a very ugly place.

RIP President Kennedy.

Never Forget!

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

I remember my mother crying. And calling my grandmother. My father came home from work, and dinner was silent as they just watched the news on TV.

I didn't fully understand what was going on, but it made me sad to see my parents so sad. I remember being really spooked by the riderless horse during the funeral procession.

My thoughts and prayers are with the countless other women JFK might have "known" had his life not been so tragically cut short.

I actually was driving downtown today and drove right over the spot where it happened, not even realizing that it was the 42nd anniversary.

The assassination is my first memory of implied visually graphic violence. Our TV was black and white at the time, but the images of Jackie standing next to Lyndon Johnson as he was sworn in...with the dark stains all over her dress that everyone knew was blood...were nothing short of horrific.

42 Years. My God, it does not seem that long.

I remember how when Marina Oswald saying her husband was a patsy, Many ( including myself ) thought she was delusional. She was not. The fact that despite all the security Ruby got in to silence Oswald proved there were many involved in this assasination & we will never know what really happened that day

I was in second grade and we were lined up in the hallway. My teacher came into the hall crying and we were sent home

The one bizzarre thing I remember is these girls of about ten, skipping up Snyder Avenue in Brooklyn singing "President Kennedy's dead."

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

am I the only one who feels disgusted that a post of remembrance of a great man has 9 posts, while "dead ugly dog" has 29, and "whole class gets in trouble" has 32?
This is indicative of American Society........out of sight, out of mind.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.

Each evening, from December to December,
Before you drift to sleep upon your cot,
Think back on all the tales that you remember
Of Camelot.
Ask ev'ry person if he's heard the story,
And tell it strong and clear if he has not,
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called Camelot...

I saw the video of the assassination for the first time in class last year. Even with the forensic distance offered by history, it was horrific and abominable. Poor Jackie Kennedy, who witnessed the whole thing up close; I don't know how she could have remained sane for the rest of her life.

Well, you know, some would say she didn't, exactly.

But it did make for some awesome theatrical moments in Assassins.

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

It was surprising that on the 6:30pm ABC news this evening there was no mention of this tragedy which defines a generation, and altered the course of U.S. history.

The closing segment was on last night's final broadcast of Ted Koppell on Nightline. Huh?

Will today's tv news broadcasters ever realize that they are not the news?

It was a Friday, I was in the 9th grade. I was changing classes during the 2:30 period break when a friend yelled the news to me across the heads of my classmates. I recall the commotion of every rushing to change classes, many oblivious to what was being yelled out. There are always a few moments in one's life that are always clear and sharp. This is one of those for me.

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

I was going to post something before, but figured someone who was actually alive then should start it.

It's one of the only things I know about history (and I know NOTHING about history) because of the Assassins OOBCR, track 8.

And yeah, I'm surprised I hadn't heard anything about it either. I kept going back to my iPod to check the date and make sure I wasn't mistaken or something.

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

I was three years old. President Kennedy was the first "famous person" I had any knowledge of. My name was Jon, and I was the same age as John-John. I remember watching the funeral procession. I remember watching as Jack Ruby shot Oswald on live TV. I remember falling in love with Caroline Kennedy. She was so different from all the little girls in my neighborhood. She always was dressed up in these beautiful outfits. Like a princess.

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

Although I was not alive when this tragedy occurred, I agree that this was a huge turning point in American life, much like 9/11 or Pearl Harbor. These events show us that we are not all the same, that even great people are human and fallible, and yet we are all connected by common experiences. When I was in DC many years ago, JFK's burial site was the first place I wanted to visit and second only to the Vietnam Memorial in emotional impact.

re: 42yrs ago today, JFK is assasinated

lildogs.......I remember so little of the Vietnam Memorial......as I literally could not stop crying.......so many names I searched for, and found. That ranks second only to the Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps in magnitude of emotion for me
