I'm sitting here kind of bored, wondering why the green rubber bracelet on my wrist is stretching. I figured I should make good of my boredom and my stretching bracelet, and start a serious thread, something it seems I rarely do anymore, for a good cause.

I didn't see a thread specifically about this when I searched, but I'm sure people are at least aware of the situation; if you're not, visit the site and learn about it. And, whether or not you're familiar with it to begin with, it's a website for making donations, which hopefully some of you will consider doing, even if it's just enough to get a bracelet, which you can get from the website, I believe.

I'm not sure why I didn't think to post this a while ago, and I'm surprised no one else has, even though it's come up on politically-minded threads, but it can't hurt to spread the word, I guess.

The crisis in Darfur is part of what drives me to want to take up international law some day. The humanitarian problems that we're so shielding from in our first world countries are horrifying beyond imagination or comprehension. Every time I donate to a new cause (tsunami, Katrina, etc.), I match that with a new donation to Darfur.

son_of_a_gunn, about... a month ago or so, there was a big surge in media coverage, but that seems to have died again.

It makes me sick that so much of America is not aware what is happening in this AWFUL genocide going on in Sudan. I ha ve already gone through a seminar to teach people about the situation, but I can't emphasize enough how important it is to make sure that EVERYBODY knows of what is going on, at this point anything helps.

Neddy - I would unfortunately counter that it's not so much that they don't know, as it is that they don't care. You're talking about people who can only put things into context as it affects them PERSONALLY - look to 9/11 for evidence - what's happening in that 'foreign' place has no meaning. Look at the response when you try to discuss immigration.

This would only resonate if it had worldwide economic impact - which it doesn't. They're expendable in the world's eyes.

And why is this coming to light NOW? It's NOT new.

DG- You are right. There are a large amount of people who honestly DON'T CARE, and that is DISGUSTING. But I think there are also a larg amount of people who are unaware of what is going on, due to poor media coverage, and other reasons.

neddy - not to put too fine a point on it, but if it is a lead story on the Yahoo site, you're reaching the last of the people who can even read.

Sometimes, the cliche' "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" is true. That's why I always preferred the bastardization, "You can lead a horse to water. And if he doesn't drink, you can drown him."

I did a project on Darfur last year in history, and this year there was a huge movement within my school to take more charitable action. I'm glad to see this thread on these boards.

I'd be happier to see world governments actually taking a stand or action - but that's something that they seem to have collectively decided to pass on.

Again, follow the money.

On a similar note, you guys should also head on over to http://www.actionburma.com. It's a sad, sad world out there, and we are all incredibly fortunate to be able to express whatever the hell we want on public message boards without any fear of the consequences.

Is it really 'fortunate' to be able to be blowing in the wind? I know what you're saying - and I truly DON'T take it for granted - but what does that lead to, in the long run, for the whole of humanity?
