Back in the 1960s, MAD Magazine did a Fiddler on the Roof spoof called Antenna on the Roof that chronicles the life of the Buckchasers, Jewish-American descendents of Tevye and Golde (though it is never revealed in the parody which of Tevye's daughters they descended from), as they try to cope with the problems of 60s suburban America.

It was one of my favorite MAD parodies. So much so that my theater-obsessed brain thought "Hey, I wonder if I could make this into an actual stage musical. It's probably public domain by now if it's from the 60s."

Here's an example of one of the songs to give you an idea of the kind of songs it has. All the songs parody Fiddler songs and this is part of their take-off on "Sunrise, Sunset" so sing it to that tune in your mind.

Look at this woman pushing 50
Trying so hard to hide the truth
Now that she's getting so much older
She seeks youth
Look at her going to beauticians
Giving her frame an overhaul
What treatment's left for her
She's had them all

Hair dyed, hair set
Old age, not yet
Wrinkles disappear
One facelift following another
Taking off still another year

Look at this hypocrite I married
Wearing a thousand buck toupee
Look at him covering his fringe with
Clairol spray
Shots from the doctor he is getting
Giving him new virility
He says they're helping him but
Don't ask me

Each day, we wake
Ten pills we take
One for every gland
With all this youth that we both yearn for
How come our children we can't stand?

So, do you think this would work on stage for modern audiences? If so, I need people's help getting it there.

I don't know about the article, but "Fiddler" is definitely not public domain.
