re: A Poll: Which Document Would You Die to Defend?

I wish I could say that I would defend the Constitution but since it still classifies me as 3/4 of a person, I'll have to step away from that. So it would be the Bible, but not the "version" that people manipulate and use to justify hate and ignorance. What I really want to do is have clarity achieved in both. I also would love it if true understanding of the Koran was achieved, so people would realize that all members of Islamic faith aren't America hating terrorists who fly planes into buildings, just those who have perverted it for their means.

i don't find them to be mutually exclusive.

i don't feel that i have to give up my faith to be an american nor do i feel that being an american requires that i abandon my faith.

if faced with a situation as the kids in columbine were with a choice between denying god and death, i'd like to think i would not deny god. likewise, if i were in a situation like fabrizio quattrocchi was when facing beheading at the hands of iraqi butchers, i'd llike to imagine i'd have the balls to try to tear my hood off and shout as he did, "i'll show you how an italian (in my case american) dies!" at least that's what i'd like to think.

sorry, not gonna pick one.

I agreee, Papa. Both are important to me, no need to chose.

Paradox Error, the Right to Bear Arms didn't cause Columbine or any school shooting, it's a lack of responsibility. No way should the giovernment tell anyone they can't own a gun! That's why it's a free country.

Scorning the right to bear arms so completely is easy nowadays, but remember the Bill of Rights was drafted after a revolution fought by non-official armies and militias. Organized citizens with guns, in other words.

And as much as people like to pretend that religion has no place in anything, the values of the Bible (and Judeo-Christian values in general) heavily inform the Constitution and most Western law systems. They're not mutually exclusive.

I would not die for either. I won't get into the whole religion thing, it's not for me, however I respect it and those who practice.

These days defending the Constitution would also mean defending Bush, and I would not.

"These days defending the Constitution would also mean defending Bush, and I would not."

I totally disagree. Right now, the Constitution needs to be defended *against* Bush et al. I can't recall a time when the ruling party showed such blatant disregard for the document on which our country is based. I have been know to spout left win rhetoric upon occasion, but I have to tell you, I take the Constitution very seriously. It deserves better than the cavalier disrespect it has received at the hands of the religious right.

Plum and iflitifloat said it better than I could. Honestly, the constitution is for ALL of us and has nothing to do with partisanship. HATE this rationale that being anti-administration makes one anti-American. On the contrary, speaking out against an authority is a fundamental American trait--one of the things on which the constitution was built!

(And I could have sworn that the 3/5--not 3/4?--item was nullified. Could be wrong!)

and the beauty of this country is that we can agree to diagree.

I would not die defending the constitution, and I stand by that. I did my time in the military.

However you all have a good point, I would defend the Constitution against the current regime, you have a valid point there. And were American soil attacked I would defend my home.

Um...I wouldn't defend the Bible if someone paid me.
