I don't know if "comedy" is the right way to go, though--I love the way the movie uses music, especially Puccini arias, to express the characters' hidden passions. A score written in this vein would play beautifully against the repression and primness in the dialogue.

Amen.

I thought I read somewhere that it was going to be an opera. Am I just imagining that?
A musical is an excellent possibility, but it would need an AMAZING book writer to fuse the gorgeous and witty dialogue with an appropriate score.
I think it would be just as entertaining if it were a play. I'm not sure it really needs musicalization. It might slow the story down too much. But the film is perfection. Maggie Smith is flawless. Rupert Graves and Julian Sands never looked better.

Coincidentally, on my recent trip to Italy, while in Florence, we actually had a room with a view!
Our hotel was on the Piazza San Giovanni, and our window was directly across from the south doors of the Baptistry. It was incredible!
