to Beverly Sills. Stepping down from her chairmanship at Lincoln Center, retiring for good. The article mentions that she's had to put her husband in a nursing home - my heart goes out to her. One of the most talented, charismatic, and nicest people ever. Here's to you, Bubbles! *raises glass*

Ditto! I saw her many, many years ago at the Academy of Music in Philly when I was a little pati b. I was flabergasted at her talent and graciousness.

Ms. Sills has been given a tremendous amount to cope with in her personal life--her husband is in the middle/late stages of Alzheimers, her daughter, Meredith, is deaf (ironic as well as unfortunate) and her son, Buck, is mentally disabled (autistic?). She has always, in my experiences with her, been so gracious, charming, un-complaining, optimistic and vigorous. She deserves all the kudos she receives for her forceful and winning manner, not to mention her tremendous talent and professional achievement.

Raise a glass, indeed.

I was very struck when a while back she was quoted as saying "I'm not happy, I'm cheerful," which I took to mean that she was making the best she could out of an often difficult situation.

Her daughter is deaf, yes, but "speaks" five languages. She's freaky intelligent. The son is way beyond autism - I'm not sure exactly what's wrong with him, but he's been institutionalized most of his life.

Didn't mean to suggest any lack of intellectual capacity--just identifying one of the issues Ms. Sills has dealt with...
