I actually found this thinking it was just going to be digitally remastering the original.

Lo and behold, they are making two sequels- obviously you see an aged Jeff Bridges- so I wondered what this was all about.

Synopsis:
Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his fathers disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevins loyal confidante (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

It sounds a bit interesting and Disney in recent years has reconciled with the financial failure of the film but how many people under the age of 25 know about this movie.

Oh yeah Daft Punk is doing the score. That'll get the younguns in!

I was watching CSI on Spike a couple of weeks ago and they had an ad for the video game awards. During the ad they were showing titles for upcoming games that would be previewed during the awards. Lo and behold, one of them happened to be Tron. Now, I haven't seen the whole movie, but from what I did see, it falls into the "so bad it's good" category. Now, I am wondering, with the sequel and with Disney turning it into a video game, Maybe they are trying to bring it back now that they realized that they have the right technology for it now.

Tron was one of the most innovative things Disney did at a time when they were creatively bankrupt. To roll your eyes at the special effects is to laugh at every era's special effects. It is not campy, it is comparable to the b-grade sci-fi films like Lucas' THX-1138 and even some elements of The Matrix. It received a four-star rating from Roger Ebert as well as Gene Siskel praising the movie. It broke a lot of ground with technology in movies with a movie entirely made from the computer-generated universe like Sin City, Speed Racer, or even now with Avatar.

The entire Tron saga by Steven Lisberger will still be under his helm, he will not be directing, but he is producing and writing the following films. The new director Joseph Kosinski is full-length feature novice but knows a lot about the film tech that a 21st century Tron would require.

I cannot wait to see how this will look in 3-D.

The only campy element of Tron is this

I liked TRON when I was younger. The whole high-tech aspect of it was just so cool to me.

how many people under the age of 25 know about this movie.

The answer may surprise you. TRON was featured in the very popular Kingdom Hearts II video game. There was a whole storyline that included Tron, Sark, and the MCP. I'm willing to bet that a lot of people would be familiar with it.

I was aware of the Kingdom Hearts video game and its cult status but I am still skeptical it will be nothing but a one-week spectacle for most audiences.

I don't think I've ever seen the film in its entirety. It scared me as a child and that stuff tends to stick with you

Eris, I have been scared over a laundry list of things not as bad as Tron. The Thriller video was one of them.

Well, I was 5 when the film came out. I think it was the whole idea of being sucked into a game that scared me. And this was before I really knew what a video game was so it was foreign to me. Another Disney movie I could never get through was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

20,000 Leagues Under Sea used to be on non-stop on the Disney Channel in the Nineties, usually on Sunday Nights. I was completely unaware as a kid that I watched a movie with James Mason and Kirk Douglas, I just liked the submarine. I watch it now with greater affection, sadly Disney has not aired its live-action movies of old time in a while.

I love the original TRON. It was WAY ahead of its time when it opened and the general public really didn't know what to make of it. Like The Black Hole (another underrated gem), it didn't fit so neatly into any of the typical Disney molds and both were sort of dismissed as being more experimental Disney films, trying to jump on the post-Star Wars sci-fi bandwagon than anything to be taken seriously. I always get a kick out of watching it and the light cycle scene still holds up well. Oddly, Black Hole was Oscar-nominated for cinematography and visual effects while Tron was nominated for Sound and Costumes.

Ugh. TRON. I remember thinking the effects were cool but the story and script were lame lame lame. Time hasn't been kind to it.

Mister Matt...I loved loved LOVED The Black Hole! What was the name of the robot? I used to have the action figure.

The main robot was VINCENT (voiced by Roddy McDowell) and there was the broken-down older model named BOB (voiced by Slim Pickens). Then of course, there was the evil robot, Maximilian, who was awesome.

Roscoe - The story and script were pretty lame, but that was (and for the most part, still is) par for the course for Disney live-action films. The Black Hole was actually a more mature screenplay that really introduced a darker edge to Disney, leading to Something Wicked This Way Comes.

I never did make it through BLACK HOLE, the cuteness just overwhelmed. The naked attempt to cash in on STAR WARS complete with cute little robots dangling on wires, ugh.

And I've never forgiven them for blowing SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. If only Tim Burton would remake that!!

Roscoe - there was much cuteness in Black Hole, especially with the robots, but the ending was rather startling, especially for Disney. It actually gave me nightmares when I saw it as a kid.

I read the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes and thought Disney did an admirable job back then, but it's been years since I revisited the novel or the film. I agree that Tim Burton could be a good choice for a remake, though I'm sure he would only consider Johnny Depp as Mr. Dark.

Better Johnny Depp than Jonathan Pryce.

Better anyone than Jonathan Pryce. The only film I ever enjoyed him in was Brazil.
