AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

My parents are driving me absolutely crazy!!! At dinner about 20 minutes ago, my dad was like "We have to talk to you about the amount of time you spend online. Blahblahblahblah... It's been a year since the beginning of your "Broadway obsession", and we want to know:Is it fading at all? What do you see in it?blahblahblah. Everytime we look it seems like you are on that broadway website, broadway.com (they can never get the name right!) or on the little women website. We're worried that you aren't spending your time wisely."
I tried to explain to them how much I have learned on this site and how educational it has been, but they were like "what have you learned that is useful? Have you learned anything besides stuff about musical?" And I told them that I have learned so much about actors and actresses and plays and history and just random stuff, but they think I just waste my time! On school days, I spend at MOST an hour to an hour and a half online, AFTER I've done all my homework. It isn't affecting my grades at all. I still read a lot (not as much as I used to, but still). I admit that I have been online a lot this week because it was Spring Break, but I did do other stuff. And today, my dad was spying on me while I was online. GGRRR!! It is so frustrating. I don't know how to make them understand. These conversations always end with me in tears and I am really getting sick of them getting mad at me for being on this site. If they only knew what most of the people at my school are doing in THEIR spare time...

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Perhaps you should mention that - that part about what most of the other kids at your school are doing in their spare time...

Exactly. Next time they make a stink about it, be like, "Okay. Then I'll just go smoke pot and get pregnant like the rest of my generation."

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

I knew someone would say that, Rath. re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!
I could, but then they would be like "How do you know??" And it isn't really any of my business anyway.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

You know Elphie, I didn't have the internet until the end of 11th grade, and I can honestly say it has been the downfall of my existance.

As you can see, I joined BWW in 2003, shortly after getting the internet, however, I didn't really start posting until I got into college. The reason being, my mother would only allow me (get this) 25 min a day online. I used to hate he for it, but I realize what a good thing that was. Parents are weird sometimes, but they are usually just lookin out for ya.

I don't think there was a moral to this story.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Yeah, I do admit that joining this site has had some negative effects, but that isn't the point, at least not in my mind. Anyway, the time I spend online now is the time I used to spend watching television. I hardly watch any TV anymore.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

They're only looking out for you. They probably think you're talking to all kinds of twisted strangers. And they'd be right!

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Well, maybe they do, but that's not why they don't like me to be online.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

elphiedefiesgravity, I couldn't agree with you more. The extra time i spend on my computer is what used ot be T.V. Now I would rather listen to music and go online and post at bww. Your parents are being parents most parents are like that at times.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

My parents used to tell me that I should "expand my cultural horizons" and that's what I am doing! Right? Broadway is a cultural horizon.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

I now how popular this post will be.

So what is the point? How do you know why they don't want you to online? Truly know why? Not just one reason given?

I have a solution. Suck it up until you're 18. Get a job, count your pennies and buy your own computer and internet access. Maybe provide your own roof over your head so you can then make your own rules.

Don't whine. No one wears it well.

Be thankful you have parents that actually talk to you and are concerned about what you do. That may be the difference between you and those others at your school.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Elphie.......it only gets worse, honey.
Even when you hit, 30.....40....50......you will always be their baby, and they'll still do it.

What changes is you'll realize, they did it out of love....and because that they did the best they could.

My parents drove me nuts most of my life..........and thank God they did, because it made my life a hell of a lot more interesting!

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

u kno, they're parents. that's their job, to look out for you and to nag constantly. they're only trying to protect you and make sure you're safe.

yea, wait a couple of more years until you are an adult and they will gradually stop. until then, learn to deal with them and learn not to talk to them because you'll just get into deep water.

keep ur head up!

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Thanks for the advice, etoile.
I share a computer with my sister, so that isn't the problem. It used to be that we had dialup so I was clogging the phone line and THAT was their problem, but now they just think I am wasting my time with pointless stuff. To me it isn't pointless. Broadway is important to me and I really HAVE learned a lot. It just upsets me that they don't understand that.
Oh, and my dad doesn't want me to get a job. re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!! I do babysit, but that's all I can do.

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

Well, Elphie, consider yourself lucky, really. Because there are kids out there who would kill to have parents that are concerned for their wellbeing. So when they get annoying, and BELIEVE me, I understand (I'm moving out in a few months), just take a step back and realize that you have parents that care about you and just want what's best, and that's something to be happy about and appreciate re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

I DO appreciate them and I love them, and I know that they love me, and I know I am really lucky, but I wish they would express it in a different way... re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

re: AHHH! MY PARENTS!!

i haven't told my parents about BWW for that exact reason. they would totally ban me from using it. i make sure its minimized whenever they come in. but it has been my downfall grade-wise.

BEKA~ My computer is in a public place, so it would be hard to keep it from them. And I told them about it waaay before I started posting, when I first started reading, which is about exactly a year ago.
