So last night I decided to watch a DVD that I recently purchased (for about $10) of The Odessa File. I had not seen this movie since it opened in theatres so there was quite a bit of it that I had forgotten.

I spent most of time, however, not focusing on the story but listening to the score. If you've been missing Evita, a lot of it is present in the score of this film. I could not believe how many passages of the show I actually heard. It actually became distracting each time a new section of music was played. And if that was not enough, coming near the end of the movie, there was a bit of the music that was also very reminiscent of Cats.

The similarity is very obvious. I know that ALW would have been working on Evita and The Odessa File within a few years of each other, seeing that The Odessa File was released in 1974 and the Studio Cast recording of Evita was released in 1976.

I'll have to try and watch the movie again and pay more attention to the story this time.

It's funny you should bring that up because a few years back I saw a show on The Hisotry Channel about the Odessa File, which was an organization for ex-Nazis. Well, they went on to say how a lot of them escaped to Argentina and were welcomed with open arms by the Perons.

Didn't ALW write the score to that film?

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

Well, it is no surprise to me. I read in my guide to broadway musicals as well that the melody of ALW "sunset boulevard" was, well, taken from a melody of the film score of the British film "Gumshoe" from 1971. ALW doesn't let any melodies go to waste re: ALW - The Odessa File - Evita, he rather uses them until people notice the similarities...

This was the movie of the story upon which that History Channel piece is based. As a matter of fact one of the characters in the movie is Simon Wiesenthal.

The Original Music for the movie was by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
