Arlen Spector

The usual suspects making the usual comments...

Just 21 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as Republicans. That's the lowest since the fall of 1983, when just 19 percent identified themselves as Republicans.

For the Republican opposition, the poll had scant good news. By a wide margin, the public is more likely to blame congressional Republicans for any gridlock.

Now that the Democrats have their 60 votes, it will be fun to see who they blame when things go wrong. They can no longer say "Republicans are obstructionist." The Republicans can sit back and laugh their butts off.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

How many Republicans are left, Goth?

You and who else?

"How many Republicans are left, Goth?

Apparently, a couple of cows in Maine - although, I'm still not sure how they registered without opposable thumbs.

OMG!!! Who's next?

Jim Bunning and the rest of the Toyota loving Sen.s in the South?

Get Set For the Comedy

Here's another way to think of this, coming from someone who actually has to decide whether or not to vote for the man. PA has been moving leftward: It went easily to Obama, even in some traditionally Republican areas, it decisively voted out Sen. Santorum, and it switched to Democratic Congressmen in a bunch of races in the '06 elections as well. So Santorum's giving the voters what they want - a Democrat.

And it's not a totally shallow switch - as was pointed out above, he started out as a Democrat but switched to the Republican party when the local Dem machine stood in the way of his running for a higher office. He's pro-choice*, has a moderate/mixed record on gay rights, and I admit this is a pet issue of mine, but I highly respect the work he did with Sen. Kennedy to come up with a compromise bill during the 2006 immigration regulation debacle. I disagree with him plenty, but I don't think he's being purely mercenary here. And based on how he votes and caucuses with the Democrats in the coming months, I'll definitely consider voting for him.

*So for a while there, our Republican Senator was pro-choice and our Democratic one was pro-life. It happens.

specter's a man of his word

it took obama almost two years to decide that his vow not to seek the presidency was not something he really meant.

it took arlen a little over a month to decide that saying he would not switch over to the democrats was not something he really meant.

Specter is an 80 year old turncoat! I cannot imagine who would have expected him to win!

He looks like a walking cadaver. That's why I didn't vote for him.

"Turncoat" my ass. Heaven knows I never agreed with the man on any number of issues, but he stayed who he was. He's not like McCain, who magically changed his views on immigration for fear of a Tea Party challenger. At least Specter decided that policy was more important than party name instead of kow-towing to crazies.

It was a ballsy gamble, but he lost because he was presented with a primary opponent who was both substantively good and farther to the left of him. It happens. I still think his party switch was a genuinely good move.

oh, bullsh*t. arlen was facing a primary challenge and bailed to avoid it. put all the lipstick on it that you want. it's poetic justice that he lost a primary now.

principled. and joe lieberman was like millions of americans repulsed by the leftward lurch of the democratic party made a principled choice to run as an independent. gimme a f***ing break.

"While the Republicans were torturing and invading Iraq and destroying the economy, he stayed a loyal Republican. Now that the Republican party isn't fashionable anymore, he's decided to dump his party and go Democrat."

And now the little sh*tsmear lost the primary that he switched parties to win.

Let him rot in whatever hell awaits spineless collaborating scum.
