Hi fellow educators-
I am about to take a final about IEP's and BIP's. I am cramming all of the 504 and IDEA info into my brain. Any one want to throw in a few educational intervention plans for kids with disabilities (of any sort), at risk, and gifted student? I would really appreciate the extra help.
Thanks!

I'd like to help, but i'm not sure what your'e asking here...
mainly if you have had any students with behavior problems, disabilities, etc...what are some techniques you have used to deal with them-ie intervention plans, IEPs, BIPs, etc...
Oh Lord...I could go on and on..
1. modify work
2. preferential seating
3. use of graphic organizers
4. 1 on 1 clarification of directions
5. differentiated approach to teaching
6. small group work
7. providing hands-on opportunities
8. run off text book pages that can be hi-lighted
9. verbal cueing
10. break down assignments into manageable pieces
11. communication journal with parents
12. extra set of text books for home
13. use of paraprofessional
14. behavior chart
15. positive reinforcement
16. reward system for behavior
17. small group setting for testing
18. scribing of tests
19. enlargement of print
20. use of mult/division tables
21. letter/# strip pasted to desk
The list goes on and on....is this any help?
Princeton I love you lol Yes this helps. My text book is poorly written and I am trying to gather as many of those interventio techniques as possible. The test we are taking tonight is simulating an IEP and a BIP team meeting. We will get 2 case studies and we will have an hour to come up with IEPs and BIPs and intervention plans etc...but unlike a real IEP/BIP meeting we will have no reference materials. It is all from in our heads. We have no clue what our cases will be like, or who will be in our group, so studying together is useless. This will be an interesting test
What I've found is to NEVER rule out any option. I've almost fainted at team meetings/IEP meetings when suggestions for accomodations have been made.
With some of the people in my class I am ready for anything!
I had been on a 504 plan since middle school all the way up untill graduation... PM me with whatever questions you have.
I've sat there at times and thought, "You want me to do WHAT for the child every day?" Some of the ideas seem absurd, but I say, go with your gut. Think of a task the child may be asked to do in the regular ed. classroom. Then think, "Where will this child have difficulty?" Then figure out ways to help the child complete the work like everyone else....you'll think of methods. I have faith in you.
Thanks Princeton, I just really want to do well on this test. I want to be a good teacher. I have dealt with so many kids already who have B/ED, are At Risk, etc..and it breaks my heart because alot are falling through the cracks.
If I may make one more suggestion though..
I teach a regular ed. classroom in an elementary school. Some of my students are on IEP's and 504's. Some of the accomodations are rediculous. Some of them provide the child with some strange assimilation of what school really is. In the end, the child has done about 1/24th of the work the rest of the class does and recieves the same grade. Where is the learning there? It's important to create accomodations/modifications that help the child access the curriculum, not shield him or her from it.
I agree totally. There is a student at the school I observe at who has LD, E/BD and they just let him sit in a corner and play most of the time because he is easier to deal with. His mother doesn't care about him at all (that is most of his problem) so she doesnt insist that he get the education he deserves. At least this is how it was last year. I am hoping that his new teacher fixed that problem
