For about a year one of my "top" schools to audition at for MT is Oklahoma City University and my parents still won't let me audition there! URRR yeah I know it's far away but the training is great and it'd be such a good fit for me if I got in!! BUT the real reason why they won't let me audition is the fact that i'd be sooooo far away from them and they hate the fact of not knowing what i'm doing or whatever they have in their minds they think i'm going to do in college! It's ridiculous...absolutely ridiculous!!

It happens to a lot of people, MT or not.

You just need to sit down and talk rationally with them about all of you going and visiting together. It's not going to help to just fight because it makes you look immature and untrustworthy (this happened to a good friend of mine) which gives them more reason to not want you far away.

Make a pro and con list for them and print out the syllabus.

If it helps them...I go there and there are people from all over here. I have friends from Seattle, Houston, LA, NYC, Atlanta, and boring places in the midwest. That might help by pointing out that you won't be the only person from a far away corner of the country. I even know a girl from Alaska, dude.

Out of curiosity where do you live?

Ohio...i've actually calmly talked to them about the situation, but they said that it wasn't practical to go out there and audition and go to school because it's in Oklahoma. I've told them about the alumni, the training, the supportive atmosphere i've heard from people and it's still going to be a no. However my dad said if I don't get accepted anywhere else he'll consider me auditioning there.

That really sucks, & I completely understand. My parents are freaking about me auditioning for Emerson. My mom still has herself convinced that I'll end up at UC Davis, which is less than an hour away. TOO CLOSE.

Oh dear. Sometimes...parents just need to realize that they need to loosen up the rope a little bit and begin to let go of the reigns. I had something of the same deal happen to me when I was deciding between Northwestern and UMiami (FL). My mom initially wanted (quite badly) for me to go to UMiami because it was a 3.5 hour drive away, as opposed to a 1.5 hour drive plus a 2.5 hour flight. Eventually, she realized that Northwestern is just a better fit for me altogether and relinquished a majority of her hold on me to give in and be satisfied with me going there. I love Northwestern, and I know that I (and she, partly) made the right decision. I would have been relatively miserable at UMiami, I think. She IS more worried about me now than she would have been with me in Miami...because she can't come to me very easily in times of emergency or crisis, but she recognizes that it was the best decision.

I understand that you've already tried talking to your parents, but if somehow they are really convinced that OCU (or Emerson, in fabala's case) is the best place for you to be and that it offers more for your specific purposes than the options they want for you, perhaps they'll finally soften up a bit. At the same time, do realize that it's frightening for them to let go.

Best of luck.
