I read in the "Hurts to Belt" thread that singers should avoid acidic food (among other things). I usually have a lot of stuff in my throat so when I have to sing, I suck on sour candies or have some warm pink lemonade (which I don't think is very acidic, at least not the kind I have). Would this - the sour candy especially - damage my voice at all in the long run? This never even occured to me, and now I'm a bit nervous.
I really don't think it would hurt your voice noticeably in the long run. My throat tends to get kind of dried out when I eat sour stuff but if that helps you, don't worry about it too much. One thing you might want to try instead of sour stuff to clear up your throat when it feels like there's stuff coating it is mints (I LOVE mentos) I really like sucking on them because it feels like they clear my sinuses and overall make my voice crisper. I think the peppermint oil that's in them is just really soothing overall. But whatever works for you :)
I would look more into why you have stuff in your throat a lot, though. I find that dairy products can cause that problem.
Acidic foods will do something to your throat, stomach, etc. depending on how much acid reflux you have. My friend can only eat basic foods (no tomatoes, citrus, etc) because of her acid reflux. So you could possibly go to the ENT, and get that checked out.
Sugar free gummy bears are good to suck on before singing. Pretty much all those candies have sugar in them, which will dry out your throat.
