Anthony Franciosa, whose strong portrayals of moody, troubled characters made him a Hollywood star in the 1950s and 1960s but whose combative behavior on movie sets hampered his career, has died, his publicist said Friday. He was 77.
Franciosa died Thursday at UCLA Medical Center after suffering a massive stroke, publicist Dick Guttman said. The actor's wife of more than 35 years, Rita, and other family members were present.
Franciosa was part of a new wave in the mid-20th century who revolutionized film acting with their introspective, intensely realistic approach to their roles. Most of them were schooled in the method acting of New York's Actors Studio. They included Marlon Brando, James Dean, Rod Steiger, Shelley Winters and Paul Newman.
Franciosa was once married to Winters, who died last weekend.

oh how sad. Loved his acting...and when I was very young, he was my idea of a man.
one of my fav movies, A Hatful of Rain
Why does it seem that the older you get, the more people die?
I know a stupid question, but everytime I turn around.......

I remember Franciosa in the short lived Matt Helm TV series.
Why do these bios always include Brando with the people who were trained at The Actor's Studio, when his teacher was in fact Stella Adler.

He was such a good and charismatic actor, and extremely handsome. I've missed seeing his work in recent years, and feel very sorry that his life had to end so suddenly.
Interestingly, he's one actor who changed his professional name mid-career. Early on he was Anthony, and in later film/TV work he was billed as Tony.
