A friend sent this to me - had to pass it on...

That had me laughing and tearing up simultaneously.
Thank you.
I had the same reaction. It's both so cute and so sad at the same time.
Mom's an asshole.

Oh, I don't think so. Sometimes it's just hard to keep it together. It's kind of the dad's fault for baiting her. And Maya got them to shape up and treat the occasion with the solemnity it deserved.
Dad was fine with the kid, except lying to her about the camera, but mom couldnt bother to take it seriously.
I didnt think it was that cute.
Mom seems to be off in the clouds. "I didn't really know him." How hard is it to say something? She seems like the kind of person no one respects.

Yeah. She seems like the type of mom who drinks too much and doesn't care if her kid runs wild on playdates. Also, she seems like she's always hungover and as if her husband sometimes gets battered by her.
Like you, I'm just blessed with the ability to glean all this from a few minutes of listening to her voice.
right...she's an asshole.

I wish we could report her.
No one here knows the situation. Maybe it's a step-mother. Maybe she was away on a business trip the entire week "Lucky" was around.
While it would have been nice to maintain composure - anyone who has ever been around kids knows the cliche is true - they say the darndest things. And even though you try to take things seriously - sometimes ya just get the giggles.
The daughter never showed anger or frustration with her mother - so clearly she was ok with it

Oh look at you with your generous interpretations, Craig.
Clearly, that woman is an ugly stepmother who is going to force Adorable Maya to pick beans out of the fireplace soot the minute the camera is turned off, not allowing us to hear the abuse the child will suffer. If only we could have Maya removed from her evil clutches and placed with a family of viewers who really know the score and will treat her with the love and respect she deserves.
THAT MOTHER IS A MONSTER AND THAT CHILD DESERVES TO BE RAISED BY TWO LOVING PARENTS SUCH AS HER FATHER AND PERHAPS LEVI JOHNSTON.
She isn't a total monster. You never hear her say there's no heaven. Or that Maya KILLED the fish. Or that Maya won't be getting any other fish. She also doesn't push Maya's face into the bowl as the fish is flushed.
So you see - she's not really a monster

"What strikes me most about this video is the exemplary parenting that's going on. Yeah, you laughed and got all confused about what fish was even being flushed, BUT the fact that you showed a reverence and respect for the goldfish and that you allowed Maya to reflect on and experience her own sentiments...heck, to even lead the way...shows me that you are outstanding parents.
The proof's in the pudding: Look at Maya. She didn't become exceptional out of a void.
Very nice."
Well said PRS
BTW - watched it again just now. I don't know why people are coming down on the mom. The dad is the one who was instigating
I bet the mom served cod for dinner.

Full disclosure - I just copied and pasted that from the comments section because it showed the other direction people can go in projecting things onto this. I don't particularly think that Maya is exceptional, except that her parents seem kinda douchey.

Jessica,
This video was not taken with the intention of posting it on youtube. It was taken purely for posterity sake. While visiting our home, my brother (j0mym) saw our video and asked if he could add some captions and post it. We agreed. That is why the video was posted (10/29/07) nealy a year after Lucky's passing in late 2006. You will not find another video of Maya or any of our other "exploited" children on youtube or anywhere else.
Thank you for your concern about Maya's welfare.
You're really not supposed to flush fish.
So true Skittles. I once flushed my kid's fish (that I was quite sure was dead) and the toilet water snapped it back into consciousness and I watched it struggle to not go down the toilet.
Sadly, my kids were watching. It was very traumatic for all.
Oh well.

Too bad you didn't videotape it. Think of the amusement you could have provided!
I did take a couple Polaroids.

Post them here so certain people can question your parenting abilities!
Oh, people have been questioning those abilities for years!
Including my children.

What do you dress them as for Halloween?
