Air Conditioner In The Wintertime

Are you suppose to take your air conditioner out during the wintertime or does it even matter? I don't mind the draft, but will it freeze.

Generally speaking, u r supposed to put a cover over the exterior. I had a thru the wall unit and didn't ( couldn't figure out how) and the compressor cracked. $300 for a new one.
(didn't bother went and got an a/c on wheels so of course it goes away).
How much trouble whold it be to take out ?

Not really any trouble to take it out, just a pain to store it cause the apt is tiny.
