Shocked and saddened by this news. Way, way too soon.
My favorite Rickman performance isn't one of his stellar villains, it's his subtle, heartfelt turn as Col. Brandon in "Sense and Sensibility." I fell in love with him then. Such a talented man with unexpected "deep wells" to draw from.

I couldn't agree more, Besty. I'm going to put the film on now.
David Bowie, Bryan Bedford, Alan Rickman...... Please, no more for a while. I'm so tired of crying.
A click for life.

Totally agree, Best12bars. I loved him in Sense and Sensibility -- the scene outside Marianne's room stands out in my mind. Very shocked to hear this news, especially so soon after Bowie's death.

He was an extraordinary and loveable presence. Like Best12, I fell in love with him as Brandon.
I fell just as hard for him in Truly, Madly, Deeply and in Private Lives.

Strange that we lost two English celebrities at the age of 69, in the same week.

RIP. Very sad news. I am amazed that both he and Bowie managed to keep their illnesses out of the press.
On a lighter note: Hello Mamie!

So many of the obituaries mention only in passing his 1982 role in The Barchester Chronicles. I found his performance so memorable that it stayed with me for 30 years until I found it again on YouTube. This moment undoubtedly provided the springboard to his later career:
