I have two: Fiyero is the #1 cat, a big ol' grey cat who is the friendliest, most mellow cat in the world. He snores and purrs and goes and jumps in the lap of everyone who visits. I remember when we first got him, my niece took an immediate shine to him and spent the afternoon carrying him every where she went. He let her. He was not too happy about it but he put up with it. He loves everything but Carol Channing.

Harley is our #2 cat. A teeny tiny little cat that we found on the porch as a kitten. We call her "him" because he doesn't accept prescribed gender roles. He is painfully shy, running to hide in the crawl space when almost anyone visits. He has no tail and 6 fingers on each paw. He is a gorgeous tiny tortoiseshell cat who, before we let him in, would jump up on the window and cry to our cat Fiyero. When they finally shared the same space, Harley jumped on Fiyero like it was his long lost best friend. He moved in shortly thereafter. He loves the rain and used to go out in it whenever he could until we had a huge thunderstorm and Harley came back stuffed full of little cats. That is when we began to suspect she was a girl.

Our back-up cat is Buffy who lives mostly on our porch and only comes in to eat breakfast. She is a grey long-haired tabby who has been living in the wilds of our neighborhood for at least two years. This winter she lost the tip of her ear, I imagine to frostbite. She is named Buffy because the first time we saw her she had obviously been in quite a fight and was missing a big hunk of hair. We assume she spends her evenings on patrol, fighting vampires and demons and what not before coming in for breakfast.

Esmeralda (Esme) is a grey tabby and our first baby. We worked so hard and long to make my big move happen, we wanted to start our family right away. We poured over our version of Craig's List for kittens just a few weeks after I moved in. I had my heart set on a grey cat, for some reason. I was thinking solid grey. There were a couple here and there, but they were all gone or priced ridiculously high. One day, while I was in class, my wife sent me a pic of the cutest little tabby and said, "Could this be her?" It was. We went that afternoon and met her. We went to the closest shop and bought more than one teeny kitten could ever need, went back and paid $15 and she was ours. Now she is 4 and we live on a farm. She has a the dream life. I have a special way I whistle and she comes running. Her favorite spot in the summer is on the porch in the sun, especially when we have the door open. In the winter, she is usually in a window, lounging over a radiator. She has been incredibly patient with the baby, who thinks she is just fascinating. She scratched her the other day, which was really hard, but our daughter is going to have to learn to let Esme have her space. I think it hurt her feelings more than anything else. Esme is very independent, but loves to snuggle. She still does the nursing kitten thing on blankets. I think it's adorable.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

He is quiet and small, he is black
From the ears to the tip of his tail
He can creep through the tiniest crack
He can walk on the narrowest rail

He can pick any card from a pack
He is equally cunning with dice
He is always decieving you into believing
That he's only hunting for mice

He can play any trick with a cork
Or a spoon and a bit of fish paste
If you look for a knife or a fork
And you think it was merely misplaced

You have seen it one moment
And then it is gone
But you find it next week
Lying out on the lawn

And you'll all say
"Oh, well I never, was there ever
A cat so clever as magical
Mr. Mistoffelees"

I have 3 cats.

First one is Emma. She's a tortoiseshell and white cat. My mom and sisters picked her out at a shelter maybe 12 or 13 years ago. She was a kitten at the time. She goes outside a lot and has been known to stay out for days on end.

Everest is a calico. She is crazy. She always has to know what's going on and just has a wise guy look on her face all the time. We ended up with her when my sister moved in with her now ex-husband because he was allergic. She got Everest because someone had left a box of kittens down at the mailbox of her apartment building when she lived in Ohio.

Lastly, there is Carol. She was one I originally took in for fostering from a rescue group I work with. She was so shy and timid when we first got her here. It took over a year for her to trust anyone very well. That's partially why we ended up keeping her. She really needed a home where people would not expect a cuddly cat or one who needed a ton of attention. She is very sweet and has come around. I think there is a possibility of abuse in her past. She acted that way at first and is missing about 2/3 of her tail. She has long hair that is brown and called torbie. I think that's a cross of a tortoiseshell and tabby. I also think she might be part Persian because she has the quiet personality and long hair.
