Amato Opera on the Bowery is closing.

I read this yesterday and actually teared up. The Amato Opera Company, and the Amato's themselves, are/were such lovely and special gems. I will always iclude the Amato - in particular their "Opera in Brief" series, for children - on the list of the many great joys of raising children in Manhattan - one of the things that really make it special. My husband and I introduced our kids to the opera by taking them to the Amato when they were really young. They're now 17 and 12, and we all still regularly attend the opera. While the operas at the Amato were abbreviated, they managed to never pander to the children. We all have such fond memories of those trips downtown to the Amato - the "chandelier" (on a rope) that was raised by hand right before the perfomance began, the homebaked brownies, dapper Mr. Amato making introductions and announcements.... I guess time does march on - and not always in a good way.
Another piece of old New York disappearing. It wasn't the best theater in NY but it wasn't the worst, and it was all done for love.
The Bowery is getting way too chic.
