The funny thing about this thread is, that it was started by the person, who is the IDEAL justification, of why people should love animals more than humans !!!

Is it only the cute animals that we should care about though or are cattle, pigs, and chickens also too sacred to be slaughtered?

As a pet owner and a retail worker (for almost three years now), it always irked me when I see people caring much more about animals than the suffering of children or their fellow man (no matter how obnoxious or rude or entitled they may be). I know they feel like humans have much more control over their situations than animals do, but it's not as if they don't deserve any sympathy or help. It all seems stem from the blaming the victim mentality.

I resent your implication that cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, etc aren't cute. Also, I am a non-meat-eater for that very reason. Cows may be tasty, but they're also adorable, and I feel uncomfortable with the idea of having them killed.

I'm not as bad as PETA, who probably won't be happy until humans are extinct, but at least I am consistent in my "I love all animals and don't want any of them dead" views.

I respect that. Does it extend to fish and insects? I'm very curious and don't mean to sound like a smart-ass.

Fish and insects are a) not conventionally cute, and b) not usually pets who are dependent on their owners and the objects of their owners' love. So no, they won't get as much love if they die off in movies.

I'm reminded of the small idiot subset of animal rights protesters who objected to the World Cup being held in Korea because they eat dogs there. As if dogs are any more or less worthy than the cows, chickens, and other animals more commonly eaten in the Western countries those protesters came from. (Or as if people in those Western countries never ate dogs when times got rough. Ha.)

I'll never purposefully kill an insect (or arachnid, arthropod, cephalopod, whatever) and do my best not to kill them accidentally either.

As for fish, only in a culinary emergency. I have this really EXTREME abhorrence of fungi as food, so if I'm presented with the option of a place full of mushrooms or a bit o' fish, I'll take the fish. It's really only once in a very rare while though. And I'm pretty good the rest of the time; I use soy milk instead of dairy milk, I don't remember the last time I ate honey, and I'm big on pulses. So if it weren't for the VERY occasional fish or the less occasional cheese, I'd almost be a vegan. XD

In fact, when I move to somewhere a little more urban (better restaurants, better specialist food shops) than my current setting, I'll be giving veganism a go. It's just a shame that soy cheese-substitute is an absolute abomination. I'm really going to miss real cheese... D:

I had to watch "Women in Love" in class and there is a horrible scene where this man nearly kills a horse with his spurs trying to make the horse do something that it is scared to do. Very Upsetting.

Also, as a child, I saw a movie Benji movie...I think it was "Benji: The Hunted", where Benji takes cares of about 4 baby Mountain Lions whose mother was shot. Then near the end, a hawk comes a takes one of the babies...it was REALLY UPSETTING. I Can't believe a director would include something like that in what was clearly a Family Film. I still have never forgotten it and I've only seen it that one time at the theatre.
