Anna Piaggi has died

The 81-year old Italian fashion editor was a mind-blowing fashion icon whose enthusiastic creativity knew no equal, in my opinion. Lady GaGa, Lulu Guinness, Isabella Blow--they all fade into the background when compared with this legendary woman.

Trying to pick the most characteristic or iconic image of La Piaggi to accompany this appreciation was an impossible task. I encourage anyone who isn't familiar with her to spend some time paging through the results of a Google Image Search of her name.

They just don't make them like this anymore, and the world is a sorrier, duller place with her gone.

Riposa in pace, donna divina.

The irreplaceable Bill Cunningham remembers and eulogizes the equally-irreplaceable Anna Piaggi.

Adieu, Anna

Thanks for that Bill Cunningham link. That was a wonderful tribute to a fashion iconoclast. Her unique sense of style was unequaled. I hope some museum somewhere sets up an exhibition of her wardrobe. Truly amazing!

I cannot imagine that a person who devoted her life to fashion as she did would not have made plans for the preservation of her staggering fashion archive.

I was in London when the V&A presented a retrospective of her Art and it was one of the most fascinating museum shows I've ever seen--I went back every day for a week. It would be so great to see a set of galleries created in Milan--or Paris or New York--as a permanent home for her collection.
