Annas in JCS?

Annas in JCS?

Annas in JCS?#0

So my audition for Mary Magdalene went quite well, but due to my SH*Tty opera schedule they decided to go with someone else- which is totally cool, she's fantastic (young though.....16....ahh!).
SO, they have offered me this female incarnation of Annas, who apparently now is Ciaphas's "concubine", something to that extent, and she uses her sexuality to get the story out of Judas, or something. I don't know the show very well and I understand the concept of this new Annas even less.
SO due to the aforementioned scheduling conflicts, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.
I was all ready to say no.....until I found out that the lead singer of the Tragically Hip may be playing Ciaphas.
Descisions, descisions.
For those who know the show, what do you think I should do?

That's a really horrendous 'non-traditional' casting idea. Annas is a high priest, not a concubine. The show is pretty clear that Judas makes his decision by either his own volition or through divine intervention, he's not seduced into it, that trivializes the entire thing.

trust me, I know, the whole concept seems a little sketch.
But it is the lead singer of the Hip....lol.

Since I am tragically lame and tragically old, I don't know who Tragically Hip are.

Honey, because you are tragically lame AND tragically old, you SHOULD know who the Hip are!
They're from Canada but they're international stars, and have been since the 80s.
"Ahead by a Century", "New Orleans is Sinking", "Blow at High Dough", "Looking for a place to happen", "Fifty mission cap", "wheat kings", trust me, you know these guys.
p.s. my bad, it's the lead guitar player who may be playing Ciaphas.

I'm either too cool or too lame to know who they are.

I'm guessing the latter.

I mean, I saw Poison in concert.

Twice.

Considering the lead singer of Tragically Hip is not a bass and does not stylistically sing on pitch, I don't see it as much of an incentive unless you just want to meet the guy. I like the band ok, but the production seems to be severely misguided.

Again....I say.."rent the movie" of JCS...rent them all and get a feel for the role of Annas. He certaintly didn't use his sexual prowess to seduce anyone, especially the emotionally challanged Judas.

Annas is not a big role, then neither is his physical character, though it is considered part of the principal cast.

Female casting for this seems a bit akward to me,,,but if you must...

I always wanted to see a JCS with a non-traditional looking Jesus...you know - one that looked exactly how Jesus looked...closer to a black man.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Oddly enough...the book of Apocalpse was written by Mr. Mistoffoles(sp)....or was that Snuffalopugus? You know how ALW loves a good rhyme.

Hey now, don't go dissing on ALW. re: Annas in JCS? But, I think it is a bad idea to have a cocubine to get Judas to explain everything. He does it on his own accord.

MIster Matt, I goofed, it's actually the lead guitar player- Robbie Baker.
Like I said, I don't completley understand the concept behind it. It was really nice of them to change the role for me, they couldn't give me Mary because of my time commitments but they did want to give me a role in the show. Frankly I think they're really grasping at straws and I agree, it does seem strange to rewrite the bible. Having worked with this director before, I have confidence in his ideas (he did a brilliant Cabaret), but I need to look into the role a bit more.
Movie time!

I played Annas in a summer stock production years ago, Annas was a fun role. Our director did this modernization concept, having the soldiers with machine guns, etc. I was in total Goth drag for Annas. Concept worked. He also put the title number at the end of the show instead of where it is in the score. Judas is enticed to betray Christ with silver pieces, so it might work if a couple of boobs were waving the pouch at him! I've the seen the witch in Into the Woods PLayed by a man, which worked. Good luck!
